Position

Renato Antonini, Partner focuses on EU trade and WTO laws relating to trade protection measures and dispute settlement. He has extensive experience in EU and Italian customs and export control law. He also advises clients in EU and Italian competition law, particularly in cartels, state aid, and abuse of dominance issues. Renato has assisted clients in many EU and BRIC trade defence investigations, such as antidumping, antisubsidy, and anticircumvention investigations, as well as a full range of other trade matters, and he has successfully defended clients' interests before governments and courts. Recent matters include the EU antidumping investigation on imports of hollow sections, the Chinese antidumping investigation on imports of market pulp from the U.S., and WTO legal assistance concerning trade barriers in Japan. Renato also advises clients in tariff classification, customs valuation, dual-use goods, and sanctions. Other recent matters include the OLAF investigation on imports of fasteners. Renato is chairman of CeSDE (Centro Studi di Diritto Doganale Europeo), an Italian center for the study of EU trade, and he is a member of the International Bar Association. He is a regular speaker at seminars and conferences and has been invited by governments to hold training courses on export controls and trade defense.

Admitted to the Brussels and Rome Bars. Renato is also a member of the International Academy of Customs Law, as well as a member of the advisory board of Practical Trade & Customs Strategies, edited by Thomson Reuters.

Renato Antonini’s practice at Jones Day spans trade defence, WTO matters, export controls, customs issues and trade agreements. Solvay is a key client and the firm is currently advising the Belgian chemical company on export control matters and anti-dumping procedures. The team also successfully challenged EU tariffs on fasteners for Changshu City Standard Parts Factory and Ningbo Jinding Fastener Piece. Senior associate Eva Monard is also noted.

  • US rules regarding offshore accounts

    The Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment Act 2010, enacted on 18 March 2010, imposes a new US withholding tax and reporting regime, known as the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA). The FATCA regime applies generally to payments made after 31 December 2012, except on obligations (to be defined in future guidance) outstanding on 18 March 2012. Substantial effort is required by foreign entities to bring their worldwide operations and policies into compliance with the FATCA rules as of the effective date.
