Hausfeld & Co LLP

The firm: Hausfeld is a leading disputes-only specialist law firm with offices on both sides of the Atlantic. It pioneered competition damages actions in Europe and is recognised as innovators in the legal market. Its team comprises highly experienced commercial litigators with a proven track record in competition, commercial — including financial services, shareholder claims, technology and insolvency — and human rights and environment litigation.

As market leaders, the firm regularly act for a number of the world’s largest organisations. Its ability to offer flexible engagement structures and willingness to share risk, enables clients to pursue claims with a level of cost risk best suited to their circumstances. The firm’s conflict-free platform means that it can take instructions where many other firms cannot. It has considerable expertise in doing so for high profile and high value disputes and its opponents are typically Magic/Silver Circle and top US firms. With 11 offices across Europe and the US, Hausfeld can litigate in jurisdictions that suit its clients best.

Types of work undertaken:

Competition litigation: Hausfeld is widely recognised as the market-leading claimant practice for European cartel damages claims. The dedicated competition damages actions team — the largest in Europe — has been involved in more recoveries than any other firm. It is one of the few claimant firms with substantive experience in taking cartel damage claims to trial. It has the strongest antitrust automotive practice in Europe and offers in-depth expertise on the cross-over of IP and antitrust, having taken on some of the largest tech companies in the world. The team won the 'Innovation in Legal Expertise - Dispute Resolution' award at the FT Innovative Lawyer Awards 2018 for its work on  the Trucks cartel and was nominated as 'Competition Team of the Year' for their work on the Bearings cartel by Legal Business Awards 2019.

Commercial litigation: The respected commercial litigation team has an excellent track record in litigating complex, high value disputes, often with an international or multi-jurisdictional angle. The team has challenged some of the best known financial institutions worldwide and regularly receives referral work from some of the most recognised names in the legal world when they are conflicted. For example, in recent years it has been instructed on a number of the highest profile banking litigation cases arising out of LIBOR manipulation and interest rate swap mis-selling.

Human rights/consumer/environmental litigation: 'Righting a wrong' lies at the heart of Hausfeld's ethos. One strand of its work focuses on wrongdoing in public, human rights and environmental law. The team litigates and advises individuals and groups globally, who have suffered human rights and/or environmental harms. The firm also work extensively on climate justice. The team was shortlisted for The Law Society Legal Excellence Awards 2019 in the 'Access to Justice' category for its work on Free Periods.
