Position

Partner who has been a banking and finance lawyer for 29 years. He has a huge depth of experience in finance matters, with a particular specialisation in real estate finance. Acts for lenders, borrowers and investors in respect of all aspects of real estate finance: both investment and development, and whether bilateral or structured deals involving different layers of debt. Steve has particular expertise when financing operating property businesses,  hotels, student accommodation and healthcare, as much of his earlier career involved leveraged/acquisition finance, takeovers/P2Ps and general corporate finance. Steve is the real estate finance client partner for Hermes, Santander, Aries, First Alliance, M&G, Blackrock, Quintain, Telereal and a number of other significant institutions.

The 'experienced, commercial' team at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP had an active year, handling two of the most high-profile real estate finance transactions of 2017: Claire Watson advised CC Land on the £622m financing of its acquisition of the 'Cheesegrater' building at 122 Leadenhall Street, and department head Naveen Vijh assisted Blackstone Real Estate Debt Strategies with providing a £323m loan to refinance existing debt, facilitate a corporate reorganisation and develop St Giles Circus, a mixed-use project in the West End. The practice has a strong client base on the lender and sponsor sides, covering clearing banks, major investment banks, insurers, US financial institutions and funds; new clients include Wells Fargo Bank, HSBC Investment Bank and Blackstone. Other noted members of the team are Daniyal Ansari, who is 'very hand-on and leads transactions well', Steve Clark, Gordon McMillan, who was promoted to partner in April 2018, and senior associate Payam Yoseflavi.
