Tax Tier 1

The practice at Baker McKenzie has particular expertise in matters involving Latin America, Asia and the US. Banking and finance: asset finance and structured finance Tier 2

Baker McKenzie’s team advises clients on complex public- and private-term financing deals, single and multi-sector conduit securitisations and supply chain financings across a variety of asset classes. Practice co-head Philippe Steffens advised Argenta Spaarbank on €1.2bn Dutch residential mortgage-backed securities. Fellow co-head Corinne Schot also acts for many of the group’s high-profile clients.

Banking and finance: Financial services regulatory Tier 2

Baker McKenzie’s team is able to leverage its global network to advise corporates and financial institutions on a broad spectrum of financial regulatory matters, including fintech, Brexit planning, regulations related to alternative investment funds, investment services and payment services. The team is headed by the well-regarded Corinne Schot; she advised Invesco and one other on the real estate investment trust financing of the Amstelkwartier building in Amsterdam.

Employment Tier 2

Mirjam De Blécourt heads a group at Baker McKenzie that includes Remke Scheepstra and Daniëlle Pinedo and which offers the full range of employment, labour relations and pensions expertise, both domestic and cross-border. At Baker McKenzieCynthia de Witt Wijnen and Frenk Huisman handle transactions for clients such as institutional funds, international private investors, and multinationals and have a focus on property projects relating to renewable energy, logistics, and the TMT sector. The group's clients include Warburg HIH, LRC UK, TH Real Estate, and BNP Paribas. In a recent work example, the practice is advising Van Merksteijn International, the steelworks manufacturer on all aspects of the procurement of a new steel mill in the Eemshaven.

Restructuring and insolvency Tier 2

At Baker McKenzieRobert van Agteren heads the team and offers litigation and arbitration expertise together with corporate recovery restructuring.  Counsel Fedor L Tanke handles a range of restructuring and banking and finance transactions for corporations and Dutch and German financial institutions; he acted as counsel to Landesbank Baden Württemberg in connection with a restructuring of a Dutch DIY stores real estate portfolio.

Baker McKenzie's team was bolstered by the arrival of Henk Arnold Sijnja from Linklaters; he is jointly leading the team alongside Philippe Steffens and derivatives expert Corinne Schot. Highlights included advising Nyrstar on the issuance of €400m senior guaranteed notes with admission to trading on the Euro MTF Market of the Luxembourg Stock Exchange and a subsequent €100m tap issuance. Natusia Szeliga was promoted to legal director in 2018.

Commercial, corporate and M&a Tier 3

Kim Tan heads the corporate and corporate structures practice at Amsterdam-based Baker McKenzie which, as part of the global network, offers international private and public M&A and private equity expertise, particularly in the energy, mining, and infrastructure sectors. Casper Banz and Mohammed Almarini advised Ergon Capital Partners in setting up a partnership to acquire puzzle publisher Keesing Media Group from the Telegraaf Media Group; the latter had a 30% stake in the partnership and this intense transaction attracted interest from a number of Dutch and UK private equity houses. Henk Arnold Sijnja, whose broad expertise includes restructurings and reorganisations, is a noted partner.

Dispute resolution: Commercial litigation Tier 3

At Baker McKenzieFrank Kroes is defending a former director of a South African mining company in a misappropriation of company funds case. Itse Oosterhoff, who provides 'top-notch’ advice, is retained by Asics Europe for major litigation and other legal work. Robert van Agteren leads the department, which also handles Supreme Court matters in additional to its commercial litigation caseload.

Energy: regulatory Tier 3

John Paans, Juliana Dantas, and Koen Bos are the key lawyers in Baker McKenzie's energy and natural resources group which offers expertise in a broad range of transactions and related regulatory compliance. Active across renewable energies, the team advised RoundShield Partners on the financing of several biomass projects including the regulatory issues.

A cross-disciplinary team at Baker McKenzie handles a range of corporate and finance mandates on behalf of energy clients in the renewables sectors. It acted for Triodos Bank and Triodos Groenfonds as lenders on the development and construction of the Bouwdokken wind farm. Wouter Seinen heads Baker McKenzie's Amsterdam-based IT industry group which draws on the firm's tax, litigation, and banking and finance experts to provide an all-round service to clients. The group handles technology contracting, outsourcing, and cloud sourcing in a range of sectors including health and finance. It is also noted for its data protection/cyber security services.

Baker McKenzie 's team is particularly rated for its ability to act on cross-border matters and its 'accessible' team has 'a wide range of knowledge'. Its work spans ACM investigations, internal corporate investigations, merger control and compliance. The team is headed by ‘highly skilled and pragmatic’ of counsel Christiaan van der Meer, who represented Intrum Justitia, Europe’s largest debt collection agency, in an ACM investigation into whether it engaged in unfair trade practices vis-à-vis consumers. Frank Kroes acted as for Eastman Chemicals, as the claimant, in injunctive relief proceedings based on a stand-alone abuse of dominance claim. Paul Amberg joined as a partner from the firm's Chicago office.

Intellectual property: trade marks, copyrights and design rights Tier 4

Baker McKenzie is known for its global IP network that handles the range of trade marks, copyright, and commercial IP transactions, as well as contractual matters.
