Mining Tier 1

Baker McKenzie Chile has a longstanding track record of assisting large and medium-sized mining companies with transactional, regulatory and operational matters. Notable clients include KGHM International, Mantos Copper, Minera Michilla, Atacama Pacific Gold, Xiana Mining and Orestone Resources. Recent mandates saw the team advise KGHM International on two large-scale opencast mining operations in Chile and act for Xiana Mining on the acquisition of Minera Altos del Punitaqui’s copper-gold operations in the country. In other matters, the practice assisted Orestone Resources with its option to purchase a medium-sized copper mining project in Copiapó. Santiago managing partner Antonio Ortuzar Jr. heads the mining practice and Mirco Hilgers advises on the formation, maintenance and development of foreign mining companies and their Chilean subsidiaries; Francisco Nualart and Santiago Vial are notable associates.

Banking and finance Tier 2

Handling the full range of finance matters, the team at Baker McKenzie Chile  is experienced in acquisition and project finance, securitisation, corporate loans and refinancing, as well as the offering and structuring of sophisticated financial instruments. The practice group also provides specialised regulatory advice on e-money and financial products, negotiates master derivative agreements and regularly delivers legal opinions on financial custody matters to over 20 global custodian banks. It's client list includes Grupo Security, Barclays Bank, Mantos Copper, Mizuho Bank, Emeco Holdings and Cencosud. Recent headline work included advising Inversiones Quinchamalí (the investment company of the Paulmann family, which controls Chile's largest retail company, Cencosud) on the refinancing of $100m of existing loans granted by Itau Corpbanca; and in a cross-border deal involving Chile and the US, acting for Chile-based Banco Security, as borrower, on a corporate loan granted by Wells Fargo. Leading a nine-strong team, co-department heads Sebastian VivancoLeón Larrain and Jaime Munro are all highly regarded. Competition and antitrust Tier 2

Baker McKenzie Chile regularly acts in claims before the FNE and TDLC as well as in merger-control matters. The seven-strong team is also increasingly assisting with compliance issues and has particular sector-experience in areas including banking, healthcare, insurance, construction, retail and infrastructure, along with mobile telecoms, mining and ports. Rio Tinto, Fedex, PayPal and Atlantia are all clients; the team assisted the latter obtain clearance for its public takeover of Spain's Abertis, one of the first merger-control procedures approved in Chile under the country's updated 2017 legislation. Other matters include advising Essity/SCA on an approximately $500m class action damages claim derived from the tissue-paper cartel case. Rodrigo Diaz de Valdes heads the practice and Diego Ferrada is noted for high-profile merger-control proceedings. Key support comes from experienced senior associate Juan Ignacio Donoso, a former deputy head at the Antitrust Division of the FNE.

Corporate and M&A Tier 2

Baker McKenzie Chile has longstanding experience in advising on regional and multinational cross-border deals in Chile, including M&A, joint ventures and other commercial transactions; additional areas of strength are corporate reorganisations, liquidations, joint ventures, privatisations, commercial contracts, and corporate governance. In private equity, the practice assists with deal structuring, regulatory advice and fund organisation. Baker McKenzie Chile is widely respected for its advice on complex telecoms infrastructure, big data, data security and international data flow, internet-based services, e-commerce, and IoT. The client list includes Iridium Communications (Iridium), Discovery Education, DocuSign, Airbnb, Motorola Solutions and Sony Music Chile;  the team assisted Iridium with the installation of a satellite teleport, which included telecoms regulatory advice as well as customs assistance. Diego Ferrada and associate Jorge Álvarez are the principal advisers.

Dispute resolution Tier 3

Baker McKenzie Chile's team has been particularly active in class action cases and is noted for its cross-border litigation expertise; significant clients include Astaldi, Oracle, Cencosud and Aguas Antofagasta. The practice defended pension fund administrator AFP Habitat (AFP) in a class action filed by Chilean consumer protection association, ODECU, which claimed that AFP increased commission fees without consumers' consent. Labour and employment Tier 3

Baker McKenzie Chile is well known for complex, cross-border executive transfers and multinational company employment matters, as well as high-value litigation on behalf of employers; the team is also noted for its mining-related employment law expertise, which includes collective bargaining, litigation, compensation packages for international executives, and global mobility issues. Andrés Valdés heads the labour and employment practice, of which associate José Ignacio Muñoz is also a member.

Projects and infrastructure Tier 3

Baker McKenzie Chile is well known for its mining sector expertise; the practice has also grown more active in renewable energy projects, desalination plants, ports and roads.
