Diversity and Inclusion

Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is committed to providing a work environment that fosters a culture of inclusiveness, one that respects differences in people, backgrounds and ideas.

Firmwide Resource Groups

Our firm sponsors seven firmwide resource groups for lawyers: Abilities, Asian, Black, Latinx, LGBT, Parents/Caregivers, and Women. These are voluntary groups for attorneys that help foster a diverse, inclusive workplace. Although members of each firmwide resource group may share common experiences, the groups are open to allies who do not share those same experiences.

Local Inclusion Councils

The firm has local inclusion councils in each U.S. office, as well as in London. Inclusion councils offer a forum for lawyers and personnel to proactively communicate ideas to firm management and to recommend additional means by which the diversity of the firm can be enhanced.

Family Friendly Policies

The firm has a Reduced Work Schedule Policy, which allows lawyers to work significantly reduced schedules and remain on partnership track.  The policy specifically provides that lawyers working a reduced schedule remain eligible for counsel and partnership promotion, and we have a significant track record of promotions of women who have availed themselves of the policy.

We also have an Agile Work Program which recognizes that providing agile work arrangements plays an important role in providing excellent client service at the highest levels while also providing additional flexibility to our lawyers.

The firm has partnered with Bright Horizon’s Family Solutions to offer our employees care for children and dependent adults.

Pro bono

Our lawyers defend human rights by representing asylum seekers, victims of trafficking and the nongovernmental organizations that assist them. Our pro bono matters include significant public interest litigation, legislative counseling, poverty law and transactions, both large and small, in every one of Akin Gump’s offices.

The London office of Akin Gump has sought to establish and sustain a diverse work environment where all members of the Akin Gump community can thrive and grow.  We have chapters of our firmwide resource groups to support our LGBT, BAME and women lawyers and to ensure that our initiatives support family and caregivers and that we maintain a culture that sees differences as strength.

During our recruiting process, we utilize blind screening by removing the name and gender from student applications to reduce the opportunity for bias.  All strong applicants are asked to take a critical thinking assessment.  Those who receive top scores are invited to interview, which has resulted in a broader range of candidates in the interview process than we have had in the past.

We maintain strategic external partnerships with a number of professional, social and cultural organizations to foster diversity and inclusion. These include a Bridge Builder program with leading youth and education charity City Year and a school backpack project for the families’ division of homeless charity Shelter. We also work closely with leading women’s organizations including 100 Women in Finance and Vital Voices.
