Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP‘s group consistently appears before the US Supreme Court as well as state and federal courts of appeal. At the Supreme Court level, the firm is recognized for its presence in human rights-related matters, demonstrated by its recent involvement in cases dealing with immigrant communities, Native Americans and LBGTQ+ rights. The group is additionally well known for its strength in IP, health, labor and restructuring-related issues. Pratik Shah has argued 15 cases before the Supreme Court and is noted for his specialist expertise in IP, regulatory and Native American law matters. James E. Tysse is also a senior name; in a high-profile win in the Eleventh Circuit, he acted alongside co-counsel at Harvard Law School and the Center for Constitutional Rights to successfully represent the families of eight members of the Indigenous community in Bolivia who were among unarmed civilians massacred by military forces in 2003. Julius Chen is noted for his focus on administrative and constitutional law, financial restructuring, IP and Native American tribes. The group was bolstered in 2021 with the arrival of San Francisco-based senior counsel Aileen McGrath, who joined from the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office, where she served as co-chief of appellate litigation.
