Position

Dominic is a partner in the Real Estate team, a member of the firm’s strategy board and a director and chair of the audit committee of a Nottinghamshire Academy Group.

He has 27 years' experience working within the commercial property field and specialises in complex projects, appreciated by his clients for bringing not only legal expertise but also strong project management skills.  His clients welcome his “hands on and can do attitude”.

Dominic has led the firm’s drive towards a sector-focused approach and is a key member of the public sector team. He also leads the team that works for the Homes and Communities Agency. 

He is chair of the Education Strategy Group and commits a lot of time to supporting the developing education sector which continues its rapid growth through the clear direction and focus he gives. 

Dominic has project managed many conversions and advised a number of free schools focusing particularly on strategic site assembly. He also oversees the growing property team which services this expanding area of work. 

He has also played a major role in developing and delivering new services to help academy trusts in their strategic planning for the rapidly changing world they face.

The group is noted for its strength in the retail and distribution, luxury, development and housing, public property, education and health sectors, handling a wide spectrum of issues, ranging from project developments to real estate finance. Highlights included advising Kevin Wheatcroft on the sale of Donington Race Track from Wheatcroft Properties to Motorsport Vision, including obtaining the necessary competition clearance and assisting with multiple long leases and options. Sarah Parkinson led on that matter and is praised for her ‘excellent vision and commercial acumen’. Barry Sully, who jointly heads the practice with the Birmingham-based Dominic Swift, led the team acting for Westerman Homes on the completion of funding arrangements, the acquisition of third-party land interests and disposal agreements with several national housebuilders in the context of the client’s joint venture with Nottinghamshire County Council and a Jersey-based investor regarding a development in Mansfield. Walgreens Boots Alliance and Enfield Council are also clients. Also recommended are Suki Tonks, who was recently promoted to partner, and Claire Burns, who was promoted to legal director.

Browne Jacobson LLP handles a mix of work for government bodies as well as private sector clients. On top of work for local authorities and institutional investors, Thomas Howard advised Amcor on the sale and partial leaseback of a former tobacco packaging site, which completed within six weeks. Lisa McGinn advised Handelsbanken on refinancing Cygnet Property Management’s Sock Island development in Leicester, and in the property transactional space advised the Homes and Community Agency on purchasing a 14.5 acre site from Birmingham City University, which could potentially be used as the site of the athletes’ village for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Dominic Swift  handles work concerning large property portfolios, including for public sector clients. Zo Hoida  joined from Weightmans LLP in May 2018.
