Work Department

Insurance and Public Risk

Position

John is a Partner, is an experienced costs advocate and heads a team of costs specialists including paralegals, costs draftsmen and fellow costs lawyers, providing costs services across the entirety of the firm.

John and his team deal with a whole manner of costs litigation from the various teams and disciplines nationwide. The team is therefore practiced in the costs of personal injury work (EL, PL, RTA, health & disease) and in dealing with professional risk & commercial cases.

On a day-to-day basis John’s case load is extremely mixed and varied, and he acts on a number of high profile group litigation matters for local authorities with a focus on costs management and providing strategic costs advice throughout the life of the case itself, enabling his clients (which are a mixture of the local authorities and their insurers) to secure the best possible protection of costs at an early stage with a view to minimising exposure to costs when detailed assessment is reached.

While John’s current portfolio of work covers a wide spectrum of litigation, the foundation of his knowledge and ability historically has stemmed from working with and for his local authority clients – many of whom he came to know on a personal level – in dealing with employer’s liabilities claims, highway tripping claims, occupiers liabilities claims, disease claims, abuse claims, judicial review, housing disrepair matters and cases arising under the Disability Discrimination Act. During the ‘CFA Wars’ John regularly and successfully struck out a number of CFA cases against opponents and significantly reduced costs in disease litigation cases across the board. Even though the times have changed, he still has a knack for spotting and challenging unlawful retainers for many of his clients.

Over the course of his career John has accepted instructions from almost all of the known insurers, and separate local authorities. Despite his current varied workload, he regularly finds himself in the Nottingham County Court advocating on behalf of defendants on Case Management Conferences, Costs Management Conference, Detailed Assessment Hearings and Appeals.
