Position

Associate, Catriona, has joined Browne Jacobson in the Financial and Professional Risk team, bringing the following experience:

  • leading the legal strategy on a major regulatory case against an investment manager operating in more than five jurisdictions outside Europe, with a diverse range of instruments
  • leading the legal strategy on a systems and controls case against a mortgage lender for failures to lend responsibly and treat customers fairly
  • leading on a key case as part of a coordinated response to mis-selling by insurance intermediaries, which resulted in a record fine by the FCA
  • advising international banks, fund managers and investment advisers on compliance with European legislation, including the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive and the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive
  • advising on and coordinating applications for regulatory authorisation and approved persons for a new UK retail bank, liaising closely with the regulator to establish the bank’s regulatory approval and smooth the way for its successful commercial launch

Career

Catriona trained at Travers Smith LLP where she qualified into their Financial Services and Markets Group, advising a range of international financial firms on emerging regulatory law. Following a secondment to the Financial Services Authority, she joined the regulator as an Enforcement solicitor bringing cases against retail firms.  Catriona was at the FSA through dramatic changes to the regulatory landscape and the organisation’s transition to the Financial Conduct Authority.
