Position

Adrian has been heavily involved in the academy conversions programme across the country and leads the academy conversions team from the Nottingham office. Adrian has supported all categories of school through the conversion process, including multi-academy trusts and is also guiding pupil referral units on their conversion to academy status. In addition, he has also advised schools, colleges and local authorities on a wide range of education law and academy issues including group structures and sponsorship. 

Adrian has presented at large numbers of sector events in the past 12 months and has shared platforms with ASCL, the NGA, the EFA, Regional Schools Commissioners, the National Schools Commissioner and various sector commercial suppliers including PS Financials and many forms of accountants. 

He has also regularly presented a slot on academies and multi-academy trusts for Mercia training aimed at training accountants on the sector developments. 

Adrian presented on subjects including academy conversion, group structures, school companies, multi academy trusts, umbrella trusts and duties under the Academies’ Financial Handbook.  He has delivered training to groups of schools, Catholic Dioceses, accountants and insurers on a variety of issues affecting schools and academies. 

Adrian has supported many groups of schools in developing their strategy for group working and thereafter creating Multi-Academy Trusts and providing further advice and support when they expand or take on further schools. 

He has also been involved in assisting Sixth Form Colleges to respond to the DfE drive to promote the conversion of Sixth Form Colleges into academies. Adrian has presented at the Sixth Form Colleges Association on opportunities to become academies and is working with Sixth Form Colleges to create academy trusts.

Browne Jacobson LLP’s education department acts for schools and academies on a vast array of issues, including discrimination claims, academy conversions, regulatory work and funding agreements. Mark Blois heads the team, which includes Adrian Shardlow, an academy conversion specialist whose recent caseload includes advising the Minerva Learning Trust on its expansion by way of converting two further maintained Sheffield secondary schools into the trust and transferring an existing secondary academy from its trust into the multi-academy trust. The group also assists multiple Roman Catholic Dioceses, including the Dioceses of Nottingham, Westminster and Salford, with academy conversions and multi-trust academy reorganisations. Other clients include Greenwood Academies Trust, The Priory Federation of Academies and Community Inclusive Trust.

It is advising on the creation of the Westcountry Schools Trust, which involved the transfer of six schools.
