Position

Keith Robinson is a partner in the dispute resolution practice of Carey Olsen Bermuda. He has more than 20 years of experience of a wide range of commercial litigation including insolvency and restructuring (including schemes of arrangement) and general commercial litigation. In addition, he has particular expertise in high-value trust litigation and court approved trust restructurings, often with a multi-jurisdictional element.  

He has represented trustees, beneficiaries, settlors and protectors in a wide range of contentious and non-contentious cases before the Supreme Court of Bermuda, drawing on his extensive advocacy experience.

Keith has been involved in many of the major trust cases in Bermuda in recent years and has written widely and spoken internationally on Bermuda trust law. In addition, he has advised trustees, beneficiaries, settlors and protectors in respect of a wide range of non-contentious Bermuda trust matters and also acts as a Protector. 

Career

Prior to joining Carey Olsen in 2017, Keith was partner at another offshore law firm in Bermuda having relocated to the Island in 2008.

Keith was called to the Bar in Northern Ireland (1996), Ireland (2000), Bermuda (2009) and England and Wales (2010). He graduated from the University of Oxford with first class honours in Jurisprudence and also obtained a first class Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) degree from the University of Oxford. In addition he has a Masters of Laws degree from the University of British Columbia, Canada, and a Masters of Laws degree in International Legal Studies from New York University School of Law.

Keith has written extensively on Bermuda law and is a regular speaker to audiences both in Bermuda and internationally.

Member

An elected member of the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law (TIAETL) and an active member of STEP, currently serving as Chair of the STEP Bermuda Committee. He serves on the Trust Focus Group and the Trust Law Reform Committee of the Bermuda Business Development Agency (BDA), and is a member of the Bermuda branch of the Restructuring and Insolvency Specialists Association (RISA).

Carey Olsen Bermuda was opened in late 2017 by Michael Hanson, who is known for his expertise in multi-jurisdictional crisis management, corporate, employment and regulatory investigations, and complex executive disputes; he was soon followed by 'very able lawyer and litigator' Keith Robinson, who specialises in ultra-high-value trust disputes; counsel Henry Tucker; and senior associates Cheri Minors, Jennifer Woods and Kyle Masters. Hanson, Robinson and Woods joined from Appleby, while Tucker, Minors and Masters were hired from H J Tucker & Co, Colonial Group International and Digicel Group, respectively. The team acted for Hiscox in proceedings before the Supreme Court of Bermuda against its former chief financial officer, which involved a Mareva freezing injunction, with complementary orders in London and South Africa and discovery proceedings in New York.

Carey Olsen Bermuda was opened in late 2017 and soon welcomed Keith Robinson, who established the firm's trusts and private wealth department; counsel Henry Tucker, who is noted for commercial litigaiton involving offshore trusts; and senior associate Cheri Minors. Robinson was hired from Appleby, while Tucker and Minors joined from H J Tucker & Co and in-house at Colonial Group International, respectively. In addition to Robinson's contentious trusts practice, he advises trustees, beneficiaries, settlors and protectors on a range of non-contentious Bermudian trust matters.
