Based in Carey Olsen’s Tier 1 ranked (Legal 500) Singapore office, Partner James Noble leads the litigation, insolvency and restructuring practice in Asia. James advises on Cayman, British Virgin Islands (BVI) and Bermuda law, and is the only Cayman and BVI admitted litigator in Singapore.

A specialist in complex and high value shareholder litigation, asset recovery, cross-border enforcement and insolvency, James has over 20 years’ experience working in a wide variety of commercial, trust and estate disputes and private wealth matters. Recognised as an expert in asset recovery in the latest edition of Who’s Who Legal, James regularly acts in high profile and market leading cases, particularly in connection with listed companies.

James has been named in the Asian Legal Business (ALB) 2021 Offshore Client Choice List. The prestigious list, which is limited to 10 legal experts each year, highlights Asia’s standout lawyers from offshore law firms who have exceeded client expectations. James has also been named in the Top 15 Offshore Litigators in Asia by ALB.


James has been based in Asia since 2012; first in Hong Kong and then Singapore since 2018. He was most recently the Managing Partner of another offshore law firm in Singapore. 

James was admitted to practise in the Cayman Islands in 2010 and the BVI in 2012. James is also a registered Bermuda practitioner. He is also admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales (2000), and the Supreme Court of England and Wales (2011) (non-practising).


James is a member of INSOL and IWIRC.

Carey Olsen Singapore LLP has grown considerably in the last two years; it now has the largest litigation team amongst the offshore firms in Singapore, landing a high proportion of shareholder disputes that fall under Cayman and BVI law. Restructurings and insolvencies are also a major forte for the group, which has a strong focus on the China market. On the transactional side, the Singapore team is active in corporate and M&A deals, capital markets offerings, financings and investment fund formations. The group is also active in capital markets including those by SPACs and Southeast Asia-based unicorns looking to fundraise on US exchanges. In the funds segment, it advises a range of private equity, hedge, venture capital and special situations funds. Bilateral secured financings for Chinese and Southeast Asia banks are also a feature of the Singapore practice. Anthony McKenzie heads the Singapore office and the Asia corporate practice. James Noble leads the litigation, insolvency and restructuring team in Asia.
