Position

Tim is the head of Cains’ top tier Banking and Finance team and has over 25 years’ experience of specialising in complex multi-jurisdictional finance transactions for both lenders and borrowers. He practiced in London and Bermuda before joining Cains in 2006 and specialises in providing partner-led, practical commercial legal advice.

He has significant experience across a wide range of banking and finance areas including acquisition and real estate finance, refinancing and restructuring, insolvency and financial services regulation. He also advises on general corporate matters including private equity and joint ventures, share and debt offerings on all major stock exchanges and mergers and acquisitions.

Due to his in-depth industry knowledge, Tim is regularly instructed to advise international banks and other financial institutions, alternative lenders, advisory firms (including those providing restructuring services) and corporate entities in a wide range of industry sectors

Tim is ranked as a ‘Leading Individual’ by The Legal 500 with clients commenting ‘Tim Shepherd is one of the leading advocates in dealing with the financing and refinancing of assets’.

Tim Shepherd, who leads the practice, is an expert in corporate and property finance. He is also well placed to handle cross-border issues, having previously practised in London and Bermuda. Shipping and aviation finance is another cornerstone of the practice, with clients being able to count on the expertise of Mike Edwards and Steven Quayle. Corporate partners Scott Leonard-Morgan and Tristan Head are both highly skilled in corporate financing. Stephanie Chew, who is an expert in real estate finance, is another key individual. Matthew Quinn joined the Isle of Man Financial Services Authority. Richard Vanderplank and Andrew Baker retired in 2020.

Cains‘ commercial property team provides transactional and advisory support to a wide range of clients, including international and domestic real estate investors, developers, occupiers and lenders. In one highlight, the firm advised Mainsail Holdings Limited on its landmark £12m sale of the Douglas Bay Complex to Douglas Bay Property. Tim Shepherd and managing associate Alex Poole-Wilson jointly lead the team, which includes Stephanie Chew, who is noted for her expertise in real estate finance transactions.
