Oliver’s practice includes all aspects of contentious trusts matters, shareholder disputes, fraud and asset tracing, insolvency, banking and regulatory matters. He has considerable contentious trusts expertise, having worked on some of the most complex and high value contentious trust matters on which Ogier has been instructed. Oliver is regularly instructed in relation to non-contentious trust applications such as mistake, Hasting-Bass, rectification and variation. He is a recognised thought leader in the area, regularly speaking and writing on contentious trusts for journals such as Trusts and Trustees. He sits on the steering committee for STEP’s contentious trusts and estates speical interest group.

Oliver also has considerable experience in corporat edisputes and non-contentious company applications including:acting for shareholders in unfair prejudice proceedings, joint venture disputes, advising on procedure at contentious general meetings, advising directors in relation to allegations of breach of duty, and acting for companies in relation to members’ schemes of arrangement.

Oliver also regularly advises directors on their duties in insolvency and also in relation to claims by liquidators, as well as acting for overseas liquidators in relation to applying the Jersye court for recognition.


Oliver joined Ogier in 2008 from Simpson Grierson, one of the largest commercial law firms in New Zealand. He was admitted as a Jersey Advocate in 2012, having previously qualified and practiced as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 2006, and as a barrister in England between 2002 and 2005.


Oliver is a member of the Jersey Law Society, and an overseas members of the Chancery Bar Associate of England and Wales.

The Jersey disputes team at Ogier has substantial trial and hearing experience. The team has been through a period of expansion recently, with the promotion to partner of trust litigator James Angus in February 2022. The group is led by Nick Williams , who co-leads the firm-wide regulatory practice, and specialises in a variety of disputes, including in relation to shareholders, trusts and estates and regulatory issues, where he focuses on the financial services sector. Global managing partner Edward Mackereth maintains a contentious trusts practice, but is also noted for cases involving fraud and asset tracing, as well as financial services regulation. Damian Evans  and Oliver Passmore  are also known for trusts litigation. Counsel Rebecca McNulty has built a strong cross-border contentious insolvency practice.
