Local Practice Leader of the BVI finance, corporate and funds team

Position

I am a partner in our BVI office and the Local Practice Leader of the BVI finance, corporate and funds team. I have particular experience advising on corporate and finance transactions in the real estate, financial services, energy and technology sectors, including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, debt and equity fundraising, public listings, security arrangements, corporate restructurings and corporate and commercial aspects of shareholder and contractual disputes.

Career

My clients include leading international law firms and accountancy firms, financial institutions, multi-national businesses, funds and their managers, and high net worth individuals.

British Virgin Islands > Regulatory and compliance

Working closely with an international network of colleagues, Mourant fields a cross-jurisdictional regulatory offering, advising various leading banks, ultra-high-net-worth individuals, and multinational corporations on the full scope of regulatory concerns. The Cayman-based Sara Galletly is a dual-qualified (BVI and Cayman) practitioner whose regulatory expertise is particularly concentrated on economic substance compliance, financial sanctions regimes, and automatic exchange of information laws. Finance, corporate and funds head Ian Montgomery specialises in cross-border transactions in highly regulated sectors, while counsel Saraid Taylor has most recently advised on change of control applications and digital asset launches.

British Virgin Islands > Banking, finance and capital markets

Fielding a ‘responsive and commercial‘ team which is ‘incredibly easy to work with‘, Mourant‘s BVI practice is able to draw upon a wider global network of offices, making it well placed to advise on a host of cross-border real estate financing transactions, borrower-side refinancings, and a range of deals and new fund formations in the fintech arena. Practice chair Ian Montgomery is a ‘first choice’ for a mix of corporations, fund managers, and financial institutions seeking assistance in cross-border deals – particularly in the technology sector. Counsel Marianne Wilson is a key contact for a number of high-profile commercial banks, which turn to her for capabilities in real estate and fund finance work. Senior associate Martyn Heyes‘ experience includes share and debt offerings, capital raisings, and leveraged finance transactions.

British Virgin Islands > Corporate and commercial

Relied upon by a varied roster of corporates – including logistics groups and timberland companies – the team at Mourant increasingly handles cross-border technology M&A deals for well-known gaming studios, digital asset funds, and online gambling entities, among other clients. Ian Montgomery – who chairs the cross-practice finance, corporate, and funds team – is a strong choice for the firm’s technology sector clients, while the dual-qualified (BVI and Cayman) Sara Galletly is noted for the depth of her regulatory expertise, including advising on the economic substance and anti-money laundering compliance concerns associated with transactions. Counsel Saraid Taylor is particularly experienced in corporate finance transactions.
