Testimonials

‘Nicholas Ferrar is super. He is practical, really interested in the nuts and bolts of the patents themselves, and has great experience both in house and in private practice. His team is really efficient and responsive and has made my job a lot easier by providing much-needed clarity.’

‘Nic Ferrar makes it all simple, and is very proactive in his advice but not overbearingly so. A great business partner to have.’

‘Always professional but easy to interact with.’

‘One of the key strengths of the team at Adamson Jones is the ability to provide detailed legal advice in the context of the commercial requirements and position of the client. There is a keen awareness of clients having usable IP, rather than having IP for IP’s sake, and where the scope of patents or designs might be limited, they will highlight this, which is extremely useful.’

‘With all of the people we deal with at Adamson Jones, there is a feeling that they are working with us, rather than for us. Their commercial understanding is part of this, but also their willingness to make themselves available at short notice to discuss cases and issues. Simon Cooper deserves a special mention – his advice is always detailed, considered, relevant and clear.’

Adamson Jones provides effective intellectual property (IP) services encompassing patent, design and trade mark protection and advice in the UK, Europe and throughout the world.

The firm: From its beginnings as a single-practitioner firm specialising in life sciences, it currently employs 22 people, of whom 7 are qualified patent attorneys with a range of technical expertise across a number of technical areas. These range from pharmaceuticals, chemistry and biotech to mechanical engineering and advanced physics, and active patent, trade mark and design practices. While the firm’s practice in the areas of chemistry and life sciences remains strong, most growth in recent years has been attributed to offering its services to a broader range of industry sectors.

Since 2004, the firm has been based at BioCity Nottingham, the UK’s largest bioscience and healthcare innovation centre. BioCity provides a unique and vibrant environment, giving the firm and its clients access to an extensive business support network.

The firm continues to expand with the opening of a new office in Leicester at the beginning of 2017 and the provision of a meeting facility in London. The aim of the Leicester office is to provide on-hand expertise to support the significant manufacturing industry in Leicestershire and the opportunities it faces over the coming years. The London meeting facilities have been put in place to accommodate national clients based outside the East Midlands area, as well as overseas clients and contacts, which provide much of the firm’s turnover.

Its presence at these locations is intended to underpin its belief in forming close working relationships with clients in order to provide services that are better tailored to their needs.

Types of work undertaken: Adamson Jones works with a very wide range of organisations, ranging from start-ups to multinational corporations. Much of its work is done for SMEs. Even in that sector, though, there is a considerable spread of company size, some clients being smaller start-ups while others are established, privately owned, internationally active and profitable businesses of 100-500 employees.

Patents: Adamson Jones offers the following services: patentability advice; searches; identification of potential infringement risks; freedom to proceed advice; enforcement advice; drafting patent specifications; filing strategy for obtaining patent protection in a selection of territories; renewals; UK patent applications; PCT (international) patent applications; and European patent applications.

Pharmaceuticals and healthcare: the firm’s team includes patent attorneys with technical backgrounds in chemistry, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, genetics and immunology. The team has extensive experience of patent applications involving pharmaceutical and biotechnology matters, including active pharmaceutical ingredients, formulations, drug delivery, new medical uses and dosage regimens.

Medical devices: all of its attorneys have experience of patent applications involving the biomedical sciences. Indeed, much of its practice, both chemical and mechanical, relates to the medical field, and it has extensive experience of medical science, including medical devices of all sorts (eg implantables, drug delivery, wound care, respiratory and anaesthesia apparatus and consumables, foetal monitors, urinary catheters), as well as pharmacology and related fields.

Engineering and software: the firm’s team includes patent attorneys with technical backgrounds in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering and physics. The team has specific expertise in the fields of aerospace, rotating machinery, controls, oil and gas exploration, electronics, semi-conductors and software. It also has extensive experience of manufacturing processes, automotive technologies, fluid and thermo-dynamics.
