Watson Brady is an independent, boutique law firm offering bespoke legal services to clients in and around the funds industry. Its focus is on developing valuable and open relationships with clients and adding value to their business is central to the firm’s proposition.

Watson Brady offers expertise in funds, corporate and day-to-day operational matters that has seen the firm recognised by leading directories, specifically for its work in the hedge fund sector and in the private equity field.

The firm: Watson Brady was established in 2008 on the back of a vision to offer clients in and around the funds industry a different approach to that offered by the much larger firms who dominated the sector. The firm’s commitment was to be nimble, collaborative and efficient, and to address clients’ legal issues in a determinedly pragmatic and business-friendly way. Clients now include hedge fund managers, PE fund managers, wealth managers, property fund managers, sovereign and institutional investors and proprietary traders who are based in the US, UK, Switzerland, Australia, Russia and various parts of the Middle East. Clients also include law firms looking to import funds expertise for specific projects.

Watson Brady is a specialist, tight-knit team, which offers maximum flexibility and is augmented by lawyers from other specialist law firms, all of whom are highly rated in their fields of expertise. The firm cherry picks the best from the independent sector and uses its relationships to secure competitive terms in return for an excellent and collaborative service.

The firm has the right breadth and depth of market experience to understand what drives a client’s requirements and to provide practical and tailored advice. As the firm continues to grow, it gains first-hand experience of the challenges that growing businesses face. As such, Watson Brady’s interests and experience are aligned with those of its clients.

Types of work undertaken: A core part of the firm’s work is advising clients in respect of corporate, commercial and partnership matters. This includes set-piece projects – such as joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions and start-up business arrangements – and day-to-day work around constitutional issues, commercial relationships, contract review and negotiation and corporate governance.

Watson Brady’s transactional work in the past year has included acting on several private equity investments on behalf of UK pension funds, the sale of a UK fund management business, several international joint ventures in the algorithmic trading space, various start-up projects and several company and partnership restructurings.

The last year has seen the firm take on day-to-day work – involving fund management operations, financial regulation, investment due diligence and custody and trading documentation reviews – for pension funds, hedge fund managers, wealth managers, proprietary traders and others.

The work the firm does is typically characterised by an ongoing and collaborative relationship with its clients, which allows the firm to gain an insight into their businesses, ambitions and challenges. This, in turn, allows Watson Brady to focus intensely and efficiently on finding tailored solutions and addressing specific needs.
