Paula has over ten years’ experience as an employment lawyer, and joined BDBF as a Partner in September 2020. Paula advises both senior executives and employers on a wide range of employment matters, and she has particular expertise in workplace sex and maternity discrimination and whistleblowing cases.
Paula is recognised by Chambers and Partners 2020 as “up and coming” for her work acting for high-level City employees in employment tribunal and High Court proceedings, highlighting her as having “a breadth of knowledge well beyond her years of experience” and “phenomenally quick on the uptake and a very good people person.” Legal 500 2019 describes Paula as “a rising star” and “definitely one to watch with superb judgment and a keen intelligence”.
She regularly advises senior executives, including from the legal, financial and professional services sectors, negotiating more favourable contractual terms and conditions, defending performance and misconduct allegations and challenging unfair and unlawful treatment through grievance and disciplinary procedures. Paula also negotiates employee exits, ensuring clients receive the best possible deal, whilst ensuring their reputation and career prospects are protected.
For those cases that fight, Paula is an experienced litigator and has acted in high value and complex disputes before the employment tribunal and High Court.
She also brings her unique insight, judgment and expertise to employer clients, and is experienced in advising on day to day employment issues and representing employers before the employment tribunal.
Paula is a regular media commentator, sits on the management commitment of the Society of Scottish Lawyers in London and is a member of ELA.
In her spare time, Paula spends time with her two daughters, and enjoys travelling and trying her hand at gardening.
Clients cannot speak highly enough of the team at Brahams Dutt Badrick French LLP; ‘top flight’ and ‘an absolute powerhouse’ are some of the comments on its services for senior employees. For the whole range of discrimination issues, high-profile sensitive exits, and whistleblowing claims, ‘formidable litigator and negotiator‘ Gareth Brahams and the team steer clients through the tactics and strategies that will produce the best outcome, including taking account of reputational issues. It has deep experience of the financial services sector and other highly regulated industries. The strong team has been further boosted with the arrival of the ‘go-to’ Claire Dawson, who joined in April 2021 and Paula Chan, who joined in late 2020 from Slater and Gordon, and who is noted for her expertise in dealing with partnerships. The ‘outstanding‘ Polly Rodway has a noted focus on sex/maternity discrimination and equal pay disputes and Nick Wilcox, who frequently acts with Dutt, is noted for always providing ‘cogent and wise advice‘. The senior associates also attract praise; Samantha Prosser is reported to be ‘exceptional’ in her handling of Employment Tribunal claims for unfair dismissal, disability discrimination, worker status and whistleblowing detriment.
