Career

Kate is a contentious construction lawyer with over 15 years’ experience in providing practical and specialist advice to resolve construction and engineering disputes.

She frequently acts for residential developers, employers, main contractors and specialist sub-contractors and advises on a wide range of building and engineering disputes relating to payment, structural defects, claims for variations, extensions of time, loss and expense and professional negligence on bespoke and standard forms of contract. Kate has extensive experience of Technology and Construction Court (TCC) claims and is one of increasingly few lawyers who have run multiple claims through to trial.

Kate has excellent technical skills, which are underpinned by her desire and ability to provide clients with solutions directly aligned to achieving their commercial aims. Her philosophy is “my clients' goals are my goals”. She doesn’t sit on the fence by providing a range of options but will always provide advice as to the recommended strategy to best achieve the client’s objective.

Within: Construction

Shakespeare Martineau LLP handles both contentious and non-contentious work across the UK. Ruth Phillips, who heads the non-contentious side of the practice, advises Tucan Developments on contracts to develop and lease a hotel to be branded as a Premier Inn, and also advises Max Barney Developments on construction documentation regarding the creation of a mixed-use development in Shoreditch. Rachael Hobbis, a legal director, is a key name below partner level for non-contentious work. Kate Onions, who joined as a partner from Gateley Plc where she was a legal director, handles heavyweight dispute work touching on sectors including energy, education and leisure. Mark Beesley is also a name of note. Other clients include the University of Birmingham, PBS Energo and Stantec Global Engineering – the latter two new client wins.
