The firm: The firm was founded in 1998 by Angus Whyte, an ex-City lawyer who is widely recognised as a leader in his field. Angus strongly believed that it should be possible to deliver city-centre-quality legal services to clients for fair and reasonable fees by cutting past the bureaucracy and overheads that plague larger firms. By choosing a base for the firm that is just outside Manchester city centre, adopting a highly innovative and visionary approach to working practices and the use of IT, Angus has worked tirelessly to turn this belief into the successful firm that Land Law is today.

People:  Land Law places great importance on the quality of its lawyers and support staff to ensure that clients receive the best advice and assistance possible. IT:  The firm promotes the use of IT and electronic working in property transactions via its online client portal, which is cloud based. The facility enables clients to have real-time access to their property information and is invaluable in assisting clients, their professional teams and property advisers in managing their property portfolios.

Types of work undertaken: Land Law handles a wide variety of commercial property work and has particular expertise in dealing with complex and high-value matters often requiring bespoke documentation and strategic legal advice.

Real estate team: The real estate team deals with all aspects of the purchase, sale, development, leasing, management and financing of commercial property.

Property development work undertaken by the firm includes advising on site assembly for commercial, retail, leisure and residential developments, preparation and negotiation of development, pre-let and pre-sale agreements (including provisions making completion conditional on planning, construction works and allowing for price adjustment, overage and deferred consideration), agreements between land owners and developers for the promotion of land and property joint venture agreements.

Investment work is a speciality, and Land Law assists investor clients with the acquisition, finance, management and disposal of tenanted properties.  Investor clients particularly benefit from the property management tools that Land Law provides via its online client portal facility.

Land Law also helps clients with the acquisition of properties to house their businesses, relocations, portfolio re-organisations, transfer and leaseback arrangements and acquiring properties through SIPP or SASS arrangements.

Property litigation team: In addition to handling court work, Land Law's litigation team offers advisory services to assist clients with portfolio management, and provides drafting and interpretation advice in conjunction with the transactional team, to try to ensure clients are offered the best protection against litigation from the outset of their matters.

The litigation work undertaken by the firm ranges from advice on and assistance with landlord and tenant matters; including advising on problem tenants, implications of insolvency for landlords, debt recovery, dilapidation claims and lease renewal proceedings; to breach of contract and trust dispute claims, possession claims and advising in relation to title matters, including breach of restrictive covenants, easements and other hurdles to development.
