John is the partner leading the corporate and intellectual property teams. He advises SMEs and their investors in a range of sectors and has an established presence in both the technology and art industries.
John works in the creative and technology industries – advertising and marketing, art, design, theatre, film and TV, IT software, platforms and computer services, publishing, galleries, music and performing arts. His many years’ experience in these industries means his team provides tailored, industry-specific advice for clients to achieve their objectives.

Commercial, Technology and Intellectual Property
John has significant experience of the many contractual issues a business may encounter. John has a number of long-standing clients whose businesses have grown over the years. John has assisted them with all the issues that have arisen along the way. These clients return to John not just for his legal expertise and practical solutions but because of his commercial understanding of their business and the industry in which it operates. His team’s work typically includes customer and supplier agreements for goods and/ or services, framework agreements, procurement and supply chain arrangements, franchise distribution and agency arrangements, e-commerce, cloud and platform agreements, software development agreements, intellectual property related contracts and licences, consultancy and marketing agreements, advertising and promotion agreements, outsourcing, confidentiality, data protection and privacy issues, and other technology agreements.
Art and design
John has many years of experience across the art and design industries and often deals with highly complex, industry-specific issues. Blending knowledge of the market with practical legal expertise, he regularly works with established individuals, galleries, studios, collectors, and investors. The team frequently advises artists and commissioners in connection with private and public art commissions, protecting works of joint authorship, and exhibition and representation agreements, alongside sale and ownership of gallery spaces and when they arise, resolving disputes.
Media and entertainment
Developing, supporting, protecting and exploiting media works is a growing investment market. John’s team are experienced negotiators in advertising, brands, digital media, film and theatre, live events, publishing, television, visual arts and interactive media.
John has experience of many corporate and commercial transactions with which an SME or investor is likely to be involved, including mergers and acquisitions, asset and business sales and purchases, private equity, restructuring, joint venture, insolvency and shareholders’ and LLP agreements. He is frequently involved in high level transactions and at the other end of the scale, he takes time to mentor businesses through the early stages.
Regulations: platforms and data protection
Businesses in many sectors have to deal increasingly with regulation. As platforms continue to evolve, agency and worker regulations play a greater role for many of the Firm’s clients, particularly for businesses operating as intermediaries in the services supply chain. The team are experienced in combining their employment, tax and corporate knowledge to different platform models and IR35 implications.
John’s corporate team are up-to-date on the latest data protection requirements and have advised businesses in a variety of industries on their compliance. Data protection is a key part of any commercial agreement and the team always incorporates these considerations into their work.
John has also advised individuals in sectors such as the financial services, and the professions including law, health, energy & utilities on their individual professional duties and liabilities.
As a qualified mediator John is able to provide businesses with a simple, lower-cost method of resolving a wide range of disputes out of court.
