Career

Gavin came to work for Russells in 1991 and trained with them qualifying in 1993 into the Commercial Department. His remit thereafter was specifically to attract new and emerging talent to the firm, something they had hitherto not specifically focused on.  From a relative standing start Gavin now heads up this department which over the last 20 years has grown with the clients he brought to the firm, some of whom have become award winning multimillion selling stadium artists and household names. Whilst predominately an artist lawyer, Gavin also represents music industry executives as well as other industry employees in relation to all manner of employment issues as well as producers and mixers, managers and management companies, independent music publishers and record labels as well as a number of film production companies, booking and modelling agencies and digital start-up companies. Gavin enjoys leading a team of like-minded lawyers in his department with a love of music and a passion for protecting their clients’ interests.

Russells Solicitors has ‘the market-leading contentious and non-contentious music law practice‘. The team acts for multinational record companies, publishers, leading agencies, artists and producers; and advises on music management, production, touring, sponsorship, recording and publishing agreements, as well as corporate structures, appearances and show agreements. The team has recently handled a number of major publishing deals; Jo Brittain, who heads the new artists team, secured an extension of Wolf Alice’s publishing deal with the Kobalt Music Group and negotiated the signing to Polydor of Sam Fender. Chris Gossage and Ryan Vince are noted for corporate and transactional work in the music sector and are often involved in the sale of independent record labels and catalogues. Chris Organ has a ‘wealth of experience‘; Steven Tregear heads the litigation team which features John Reid; and Gavin Maude heads the music department. Elsewhere, the firm also offers expertise across gaming, digital, social media and publishing mandates. It has recently been bolstered by several hires including Mark Ashelford, who heads the digital and social media practice, from Lee & Thompson LLP and Chloe Forsyth from Harbottle & Lewis LLP.
