Position

Partner in the employment department specialising in all contentious and non-contentious areas of practice. Gemma conducts seminars and workshops aimed at increasing awareness of the constant changes in UK legislation to the various areas affecting employment law both for the small and large employer. Gemma deals with tribunal claims including unfair dismissal and discrimination claims covering sex, race age and disability discrimination, and whistle-blowing. She advises on the commercial aspects of TUPE transfers as well as on service agreements, contracts of employment, and all workplace policies. Gemma also advises on the enforceability of restraint of trade clauses in contracts, from both the employer and the employee perspective, and issues of breach of confidentiality, as well as providing commercial, practical and strategic advice on exiting employees from a business, whether through restructure or poor performance. Her clients range from retail outlets and charities to senior level employees.

Career

Before changing career to become a solicitor, Gemma worked in the horseracing industry. She studied for a law degree part-time with the University of London while continuing to work full-time. She started training with Royds in 1998, qualified as a solicitor in 2000 and became a partner three years later.
