The firm: 2017/18 was another year of strong growth for Fletcher Day across all practice areas. The firm oversaw a broadening of its existing client base on both a national and international basis, with new multi-national companies added to a growing roster of blue-chip clients.
In addition to its strong London and national presence, Fletcher Day is known and recognised for its international capabilities. Over 20 languages are spoken within the firm which mirrors the multicultural clientele the firm has developed over the last few years.
Types of work undertaken: Commercial property: this highly regarded real estate team has expertise in complex development and finance transactions as well as a broad range of investment work. The firm acts for both institutional and private investors in the disposal and acquisition of office buildings, shopping centres and industrial estates as well as all aspects of non-contentious landlord and tenant work. The department has particular expertise in property development and will guide its developer clients through all stages of a development project. This includes site acquisition, project funding, development set up and infrastructure as well as the subsequent off plan sales and complex ground rent disposals.
Corporate: the corporate and commercial team at Fletcher Day undertakes work, the quality and nature of which is comparable to the corporate offering of more longstanding departments within much larger firms. It has a particular focus on corporate finance and investment. The team offers specialist strategic advice to companies and other businesses, and acts for a mix of clients including high-net-worth individuals, SMEs and start-up companies. Its work includes matters ranging from complex shareholder and investment agreements, mergers and acquisitions, joint venture agreements, agency and distribution agreements, to the general sale and purchase of all types of businesses.
Family: the firm acts for a variety of high-net-worth clients dealing within all aspects of family law with particular emphasis on divorce and financial settlements, including nuptial agreements. The family team has a particular focus on cases which have complex financial structures and an international element and acts for a number of same-sex couples in relation to financial and children-related matters. The family team works closely with other private client professionals (including counsellors, family therapists, mediators, accountants, tax specialists and various financial service providers such as IFAs, private banks and stockbrokers).
Business immigration: the firm has experience in all aspects of business immigration applications with a primary focus on the investor and entrepreneur visa. The immigration team also regularly advises on entry clearance requirements, indefinite leave to remain and nationality applications. Dispute resolution: commercial litigation: the dispute resolution team at Fletcher Day has extensive litigation and arbitration experience and regularly takes on cases normally reserved for the Magic Circle firms. In particular, the commercial litigation team has a breadth of experience which includes complex contractual disputes, company and shareholder disputes, injunctions, fraudulent transactions, oil and gas, shipping and professional negligence. There is a truly international nature to the work conducted. Fee-earners have a wealth of experience in international litigation and arbitration.
Property litigation: working closely with the commercial litigation team, Fletcher Day has a highly respected property litigation team. The team covers virtually all types of property litigation work – both commercial and residential, landlord and tenant and real property disputes. It also deals, among other things, with sale of land disputes and agricultural tenancy matters. The team’s clients include corporate clients (retail clients, investor landlords and property developers) and individual clients (high-net-worth and others).
Employment: Fletcher Day has a fast-growing employment team whose members have many years’ experience in handling all aspects of the ever-changing landscape of employment law and related matters. They hold a deep understanding of the legal needs of both employers and employees, and approach every case with clarity, pragmatism and commerciality.
Insolvency: with three senior partners, including a licensed insolvency practitioner, the Fletcher Day insolvency department is now one of the largest and most experienced insolvency teams outside the City of London. Providing specialist, commercially focused advice within flexible fee structures it has developed a reputation for handling high-value, complex transactions for businesses and individuals.
