Karma is an Associate Solicitor in our Immigration department, where she undertakes work in a broad range of fields, including:

She has a particular interest and expertise in international surrogacy and international adoption cases.

Career

Karma qualified as a solicitor in 2012, after completing her training contract at Fisher Meredith, where she remained until its merger with Bishop & Sewell. She previously worked part-time at Birnberg Peirce’s immigration team while completing her legal studies, and holds an LLM in International Human Rights Law from the LSE. Before embarking on her legal career, Karma lived in Italy for many years, where she worked as a newswire journalist and translator.

Karma is a member of the Immigration Law Practitioners’ Association. She regularly provides pro-bono immigration advice at sessions hosted by the UK Lesbian & Gay Immigration Group.

The team continues to be instructed by a number of London Boroughs on immigration matters. Senior associate Mariam Khaliq is active across a range of matters for private clients and handles mandates relating to EU nationals, deportation, settlement and nationality; she has a particular focus on appeals and Judicial Review challenges. Associate Karma Hickman is ‘positive and confident’ and is ‘impressive in her fast and comprehensive command of the facts and in her ability to narrow down and focus on the main issues’; and regularly acts for individual clients, with particular expertise in international surrogacy and inter-country adoption cases. Department head Charles Green joined in July 2018 from Healys LLP.
