Following a strategic review, Weightmans LLP underwent a transformational management restructure in May 2017, which resulted in a new 'client relationships' arm being created to cover six key markets: owner-managed business, built environment, corporate, private client, insurance and public bodies. Its national commercial team includes Leeds-based Michelle Mathers, who focuses on servicing owner-managed businesses. Sarah Walton in Manchester leads the group, which advises on procurement, collaboration agreements, manufacturing agreements, franchising and outsourcing, among other areas. Vincent King and newly promoted partner Victoria Robertson recently acted for Lancashire Constabulary and the Lancashire PCC in a collaboration with the University of Central Lancashire to establish a forensic academy. Laurence Pritchard was the lead adviser to a consortium of independent greyhound track owners on the sale of media rights to the greyhound races at their tracks to Arena Leisure Limited. Sean Crotty acts for public and private sector clients, such as the Metropolitan Police, Derbyshire County Council and Playground Games Limited. John Schorah, Martin Vincent and associate Haroon Younis are also recommended.

Weightmans LLP is active in the gaming sector where headline matters included advising Playground Games on a video game development agreement with a major global publisher; advising Nomad Games on a licensing deal in relating to a book series, for the purposes of developing an online video game based upon the series; and advising The Independent Game Developers Association (TIGA) on its contractual agreements with various videogame studios. Novarama Technology. It also advises Side (UK) on a number of voice talent and motion capture agreements. The team also acted for Sentric Music on the £3m growth capital investment into Sentric Music by Business Growth Fund. Weightmans LLP’s corporate team is noted for its private M&A practice, acting for mid-sized corporates and owner-managed businesses, while the 'brilliant' commercial team has experienced growth in advising on compliance with data protection and competition regulations. Patricia Grinyerl advised Enterprise Loans East Midlands on the establishment of a sub fund to the Midlands Engine Investment Fund and Roland Hutchins advised Greif U.S. Holdings on a reorganisation of its international group structure to relocate its European hub from Belgium to England. Gary Jones acted for Cawood Scientific Group on a secondary management buyout to Inflexion. Kieran Donovan advised Alliance Fund Managers as agent for Maven Capital Partners LLP, manager of the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund for Equity in the North West (NPIF), on the first wave of equity investments from that fund. On the commercial side, Sean Crotty advises the Motor Insurers’ Bureau on the IT aspects and data sharing arrangements between it and the DVLA in relation to the MyLicence Project and Laurence Pritchard is advising Tesco Insurance on the outsourcing of its claims operations to Ageas Retail.
