Following a strategic review, Weightmans LLP underwent a transformational management restructure in May 2017, which resulted in a new 'client relationships' arm being created to cover six key markets: owner-managed business, built environment, corporate, private client, insurance and public bodies. Its national commercial team includes Leeds-based Michelle Mathers, who focuses on servicing owner-managed businesses. Sarah Walton in Manchester leads the group, which advises on procurement, collaboration agreements, manufacturing agreements, franchising and outsourcing, among other areas. Vincent King and newly promoted partner Victoria Robertson recently acted for Lancashire Constabulary and the Lancashire PCC in a collaboration with the University of Central Lancashire to establish a forensic academy. Laurence Pritchard was the lead adviser to a consortium of independent greyhound track owners on the sale of media rights to the greyhound races at their tracks to Arena Leisure Limited. Sean Crotty acts for public and private sector clients, such as the Metropolitan Police, Derbyshire County Council and Playground Games Limited. John Schorah, Martin Vincent and associate Haroon Younis are also recommended.

At Weightmans LLP, team head Martin Vincent is the client partner for universities including Bangor University, Lancaster University and the University of Central Lancashire. Other key partners include real estate expert Janice Weatherly and highly regarded employment law lead Mark Leach. Vincent is advising Birmingham City University on expansion models aimed at expanding into the Vietnam market. In other highlight work, the team is advising Queen Mary University of London on its contract to deliver a global MBA programme through the University of London International Academy. Partner Andrew Roberts handles contentious matters and is advising Middlesex University on a fitness for practice challenge involving matters such as student discipline, professional practices and compliance with procedural requirements.

Weightmans LLP's 'efficient and highly commercial' department is active in transactions across the manufacturing, healthcare, higher education and public sectors, and has seen growth in activity in the IT, digital and creative sectors, with consultant Robert Turnbull advising online retailer In the Style (ITS) on its investment-backing from Livingbridge. Elsewhere, Paul Raftery advised Aspire IOM on the sale of its subsidiary Kreston IOM to listed acquirer The Financial Services Opportunities Investment Fund. Sarah Walton heads the corporate team and tax partner Haydn Rogan is also noted. Vincent King  and Martin Vincent are recommended among the commercial team, which advises on heavyweight commercial contracts for the firm’s private and public sector client base; King is leading advice for the British Transport Police on its procurement of managed network services under the Crown Commercial Service’s Managed Network Services framework.

Weightmans LLP’s EU and competition practice is noted for its expertise across the food, drink and insurance sectors, and is also noted for its experience in state aid matters. Key mandates included advising the Motor Insurers’ Bureau in ensuring that compensation resulting from terrorism incidents through the use of vehicles is compliant with competition laws and state aid rules. The team also advised John West on resale pricing issues and advised Lotus Bakeries on competition compliance laws in relation to its proposal to grant exclusive rights to a particular retailer for the sale of one of its products in the UK and Spain. Wi-Manx and Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council are also clients. In Liverpool, competition head Laurence Pritchard  advises on EU and UK competition law, including merger control and the control of anti-competitive agreements and practices. Also in Liverpool, Gary Jones specialises in state aid advice and regularly assists with grant and loan funding, regeneration projects and contract procurement. In Manchester, procurement specialist Vincent King is also recommended, as is Martin Vincent.

At Weightmans LLP  Martin Vincent  and Janice Weatherly  are singled out for particular praise. The team is primarily focused on higher education and is known for its advice to universities in highly sensitive situations such as student suicides and on campus deaths. Highlights included advising the University of Cumbria on its collaboration with 12 other universities, FE colleges and employers in the North West to deliver the Cumbria Collaborative Outreach Programme, one of several regional programmes funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England to support the most disadvantaged young people in England to progress into higher education. Other key clients include Open University, Bangor University and Greenwich University. It recently advised a major university on its plans to build a new sports centre at a substantial cost. The primary use of the building will be sports activities for students.
