Equality & Diversity

Weightmans is committed to equal opportunities and the promotion of diversity. Weightmans treats all members of the practice fairly, and creates an environment and positive working relationships which enable everyone to contribute their best.

We are Charter Signatories of The Law Society Diversity & Inclusion Charter and rank highly every year in The BSN Diversity League Table.

Weightmans does not tolerate practices or activities which discriminate against, or otherwise treat people unfairly on the grounds of age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, pregnancy, maternity, race (which includes colour, nationality and ethnic or national origins), sexual orientation, religion or belief or because someone is married or in a civil partnership.

Weightmans’ aim is to be an Employer of Choice, characterised by recruitment and retention of highly talented people who are committed to the success of the firm. To achieve this, we recognise that we need to engage every member of the firm.

Our Recruitment and Selection processes are designed to ensure that all candidates are assessed objectively against standard, job-specific criteria to ensure a clear and transparent selection process has been followed. The process is managed by people trained in equal opportunities and diversity best practice.

Opportunities for training, development and career progression are open to everyone. All members of the practice have access to a comprehensive programme of training, including job-related and professional development.

The practice supports flexible working, and operates a flexible working policy, which enables all members
of Weightmans to apply for flexible working practices.

Performance is managed on the basis of objective and measurable criteria, related directly to the success
of the practice. Our Diversity and Inclusion Steering group meet on a quarterly basis to champion diversity initiatives and review progress against an action plan.

We have established a consistent approach to identifying stars and rising stars, both men and women, as part of our talent programme, creating an effective development programme and providing mentors to support them.  This helps us to manage our promotion pipeline and our retention. In conjunction with this, we have established succession plans for key roles: identifying possible candidates to be the next directors, HoPAs or client partners and developing them in line with the talent programme.

Feedback on equality and diversity issues is collected directly from staff through the attitude survey, and direct approaches to enable us to assess the effectiveness of our policies and procedures.  Staff forums are established
in all locations, which also provides a further opportunity for collecting feedback.

Corporate social responsibility

We are proud to have a thriving Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. At Weightmans, our people are actively encouraged to participate in CSR initiatives. We engage in a number of initiatives including:

  • Partnering with local charities, to fundraise and promote their work.
  • Working with young people of all ages in our communities to enhance their vocational and personal development.
  • Supporting our staff who wish to support other worthy causes.

Charity partnership

Each of our offices is encouraged to select and support a charity partner.

Young and disadvantaged people

Staff from each of our offices regularly visit both primary and secondary schools in some of the most disadvantaged areas, whether to undertake the right to read initiative (assisting primary school children with basic reading skills), or holding mock careers interviews and CV assistance.

To facilitate staff engagement in CSR initiatives, we have a policy of offering two days paid CSR leave per year per person. This has encouraged our staff to support a number of charities in addition to those supported by the firm.

CSR newsletter

Weightmans are committed to corporate social responsibility and undertake an extensive programme of activity each year.
