Career

hris joined Birketts in 2000. He is a Partner in our Commercial Property Team.

Chris has a broad experience of complex property transactions including joint ventures, PPP and health sector projects. A large part of his work is development-related (whether acting for developers, funders or occupiers) in addition to advising other commercial clients such as lenders and investors. Chris regularly acts for clients in the public sector, including County Councils, PCTs and Education bodies.

Education

Chris is a graduate of Cambridge University and before joining Birketts, worked for a City law firm (where he trained) and subsequently at a large international law firm.  Prior to joining Birketts, Chris advised the London Residuary Body for many years and also regularly acted for several London Boroughs.

It has a strong track record in the health and social care sector, particularly for employment and property work. The key contacts are legal director Erika Clarke, who leads the public sector practice, and head of health Richard Eaton. Clarke handles major capital projects, outsourcings, business-critical contracts and public procurement issues. She recently acted for an NHS foundation trust in numerous matters including the interpretation of contract terms and public law duties associated with the funding of care packages. Eaton's area of expertise is public law and judicial reviews. He recently succeeded in quashing a CQC draft report for a care home provider. Commercial property partner Chris Barker has extensive experience in trust portfolio management, and Matthew Newnham handles employment law matters including tribunals for health sector clients.
