The firm

Fortis Law Corporation (Fortis Law) was formed in 2004 by Mr Patrick Tan under the name of Patrick Tan & Associate. In 2011, Patrick Tan & Associate was converted to Patrick Tan LLC and subsequently in 2013 Patrick Tan LLC changed its name to Fortis Law Corporation.

Since then Fortis Law has developed into a full-service practice with a total of 22 lawyers and is still expanding. Over the years, Fortis Law has established a reputation for providing quality, prompt, and value-added services to a wide variety of clients, both locally and internationally.

Areas of practice

Corporate finance and corporate commercial: this practice group is headed by Soh Chun Bin who has over 16 years of experience in the corporate finance and legal sectors and specialises in capital market transactions and mergers and acquisitions and also by Vanessa Ng, who has a wealth of experience in handling corporate finance transactions such as IPOs, mergers and acquisitions, and general corporate and commercial matters. Their team of lawyers also handles general takeovers, acquisitions and disposals for listed and unlisted companies, advising on continuing listing obligations as well as other capital market transactions.

Litigation and dispute resolution: this practice group is headed by Andrew Goh. He is supported by a team of dispute resolution specialists. It provides advice and representation in a broad range of commercial and civil disputes. It represents clients in all aspects of arbitration and litigation proceedings, locally and internationally, from conducting preliminary assessment of the case and rendering of legal opinion, to filing of interlocutory summons and court applications and conducting trials and appeals in all levels of court, to enforcement of judgments.

Private client: this practice group is led by Patrick Tan and supported by a team of private client specialists. The private client specialists provide advice and representation in a broad range of contentious and non-contentious private client-related matters and represent clients in a broad spectrum of legal matters from family law, wealth preservation, asset protection and trust, wills and probate, elderly law, real estate, crime and regulatory.

The team of family lawyers handles a diverse range of family law -related matters. It acts for both international and local clients in divorce proceedings, annulment of marriages, separations, drafting of pre- and post-nuptial agreements, international child abductions and parental alienation under the Hague Convention, international relocation and custody (of children) applications, spousal violence and harassment, asset tracing and worldwide injunction applications. Notably, the first ever reported Singapore Court of Appeal judgment on the International Child Abduction Act was conducted by Fortis’ team of family lawyers led by Patrick.

As for the crime and regulatory practice led by Josephus Tan and supported by his team of lawyers, the firm handles a wide range of crime and regulatory and compliance-related matters. The practice provides advisory and defence services for all blue-to white-collar crimes and prosecution work for statutory bodies.

IP and entertainment: this practice group is led by Patrick Tan and supported by a team of lawyers from the corporate finance and corporate commercial practice group. The IP and entertainment practice supports companies which are looking for effective and yet cost-efficient legal solutions. Clients include established corporations, SMEs to start-ups who want to protect their brands by registering their trade marks or taking their brands and products overseas. The team also assists clients in the entertainment and media industry in advisory work, drafting of various contracts, to application for licences with the authorities.

Fortis also acts as counsel and represents clients in enforcement of intellectual property rights by commencing appropriate legal proceedings.
