Position

Ms. Pallavi S. Shroff is the Managing Partner of Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas with over 37 years of extensive experience. Her broad and varied representation of public and private corporations and other entities before various national courts, tribunals and legal institutions has earned her national and international acclaim. Ms. Shroff is the Head of the Dispute Resolution practice at the Firm, with an extensive knowledge in matters of litigation and arbitration. She also mentors the Competition Law practice at the Firm. Ms. Shroff is a member of the Competition Law Review Committee, constituted by the Government of India to ensure that the legislation is in tune with the changing business environment. 

Ms. Shroff has been closely involved with some of the largest and most challenging litigation and arbitration matters in India with regard to energy, infrastructure, natural resources, mergers & acquisitions, legislative and policy related matters. She appears regularly in the Supreme Court and High Courts of India, and in arbitrations, mediations and international legal disputes. She has recently been appointed on the ICC (International Chamber of Commerce) Court of Arbitration. Under Ms. Shroff’s leadership, the Firm was engaged by FICCI and CII to represent the entire Indian Industry in the Presidential Reference proceedings (Special Reference 1 of 2012) being heard by a five Judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court. The Judgment passed by the Constitution Bench is one of the most famous and compelling rulings in India on methods of disposal of natural resources in India. She regularly represents several companies such as Nestle, General Electric, Havells, Vale Australia, Vodafone, BHEL and ONGC.

Ms. Shroff has always been active in public-policy related work. She was a member of the committee set up by the Government of India to advise the Government regarding compliance with Article 39.3 of the TRIPS. She played a pivotal role in formulating and drafting of policy documents necessary for the continuing efforts to establish India’s first ‘Zero Piracy Zone’ for the state of Karnataka, and for developing an anti-piracy advocacy programme for the judiciary. Ms. Shroff is presently a director on the boards of prestigious Indian companies including Apollo Tyres, Trident Group, One97 Communications Ltd (Paytm), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd and Juniper Hotels Ltd.

Ms. Shroff regularly advises international and national clients on various aspects of the Competition Act 2002. She was a key member of the high-powered SVS Raghavan Committee, which contributed to formulating the legal framework for the new Competition law and a draft of the new Competition Act. 

For her legal acumen and thought leadership, Ms. Shroff is frequently featured by several international publications. She is ranked ‘Band 1’ for Competition Law & Dispute Resolution by Chambers and Partners 2019; ‘Market Leading Lawyer’ by Asialaw Profiles 2019 and ‘Leading Lawyer’ for Dispute Resolution by Legal 500, 2018 among others. Under Ms. Shroff’s leadership, the Firm has been recognised as one of the world’s leading International Arbitration Firms in the GAR 100 editions, 2017 & 2018 by Global Arbitration Review.

Fortune India also recognised her as one of ‘The Most Powerful Women in Business, 2018’. Recently, Business World recognised Ms Shroff as the one of ‘The Most Influential Women in India’ for her exceptional contribution in the field of law.

Ms. Shroff was conferred the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at the Legal Era’s Indian Legal Awards 2017-18 and was awarded ‘India Managing Partner of the Year’ by Asian Legal Business Asia Law Awards 2017 and ‘Disputes Star of the Year’, India by Asialaw Asia-Pacific Dispute Resolution Awards, 2017. Ms. Shroff is recognised in the C-Suite Women edition of Business World titled ‘The Expert Arbitrator’ and as one amongst “The Professionals – High motivation levels, focus on goals and working for the greater good”. Additionally, she is the only listed ‘Highly Regarded Individual’ in India according to Who’s Who Legal 2016 for Litigation, amongst five globally.

According to Chambers and Partners (2019), Ms. Pallavi Shroff is widely acknowledged as “a stalwart in the field of competition law,” best known for her handling of cartel, abuse of dominance and other contentious issues, but increasingly active providing strategic oversight on very large-scale, multi-jurisdictional merger control mandates. One client, who identifies her as “a main reason for going to the firm,” speaks of a “great sense of comfort that she was handling the matter – always there to step in at a critical juncture.” It adds that Ms Shroff is a “very prominent” litigator in India.
