Bird & Bird's team has seen some development; practice head Sophie Dawson joined from Ashurst and Lynne Lewis joined from Minter Ellison, where she led the firm's disputes offering. The practice has a focus on intellectual property matters and the technology sector and represents a telecoms company in matters concerning access arrangements to properties in connection with its network. It also acted for an IT services company in a dispute arising from the interruption to data centre services.

The seven-partner team has been strengthened by the addition of regulatory specialist Thomas Jones, formerly at Corrs Chambers Westgarth and noted for bringing new carrier clients and matters to the team, and media and technology specialist Sophie Dawson, from Ashurst. Jones advised SpeedCast on a ten-year agreement to supply managed satellite services to nbn, and Shane Barber rendered regulatory advice to Vodafone in relation to the roll-out of 4G networks across Australia.

Bird & Bird added to its bench, welcoming ‘excellent litigator’ Lynne Lewis from Minter Ellison. The team is spearheaded by Jane Owen, who continues to represent Generic Health as the defendant in an ongoing patent litigation case filed by Otsuka, as well as representing said client as a claimant in a Federal Court case. Owen also represents Dongkuk Steel in its dispute with BlueScope. Led by Troy Gurnett, longstanding client Volkswagen receives strategic advice on trade mark filing, prosecution and branding issues. Shehana Wijesena is another name to note.

Bird & Bird is noted for its 'growing capacity' following the arrivals of Sophie Dawson from Ashurst and of Rugby Australia's former general counsel, Rich Hawkins, who is an expert in sports media rights deals. Dawson ‘has great depth of experience across media issues’ and continues to advise Nine Entertainment on a privacy matters. Shane Barber is an integral member of the team and recently advised Toronto-listed Kew Media Group on its acquisition of US and Australian-based Essential Quail Media Group. In a further highlight, it assisted Star India with its negotiations with Cricket Australia to obtain international broadcasting rights. The team ‘has great media sector and privacy law knowledge’ and covers the full spectrum of media-related matters. Key clients include Microsoft, Expedia and GlaxoSmithKline.
