Cartel investigations and regulatory litigation, together with banking and finance, competition and corporate disputes are all part of Bird & Bird‘s skill set, but the clear focus of the disputes team is IP litigation. Giovanni Galimberti draws praise for his patent and trademark litigation practice and understanding of the regulatory framework.
Praised for its ‘communication and innovation skills‘, Bird & Bird assists a number of domestic and international clients from the food and beverage industry with food law, IP matters and M&A. In particular, the practice has developed extensive experience advising Italian consortia, such as Consorzio del Formaggio Parmigiano-Reggiano and the Consorzio di Prosecco, whose protected designations of origins (PDO) it regularly protects from local and international infringements. Team heads Giovanni Galimberti and Massimiliano Mostardini are widely recognised IP specialists. Rita Tardiolo was promoted to counsel in May 2019; she has expertise advising on regulatory compliance, health claims and labelling.
The healthcare and life sciences team at Bird & Bird stands out for two core areas of focus: its dedicated team for developing possible litigation strategies on the bases of the Unified Patent Court and Unitary Patents EU initiative, and its focus on personalised medicine, particularly the interaction between technology and life sciences. Chairman Massimiliano Mostardini and Giovanni Galimberti jointly head the IP department, and act for a number of major players in the pharmaceutical industry. Antonella De Gregori, who was made partner in May 2019, primarily acts for clients in the chemistry field. Mauro Turrini is highly regarded as an expert in the life sciences field.
Bird & Bird‘s clients in the retail sector benefit from the firm’s expertise across a wide range of practice areas. It has been kept busy recently handling IP, trade mark and patent work in the food and fashion industries, as well as tax, real estate and employment law more generally. Highlights included advising French multinational home improvement retailer Leroy Merlin on real estate matters in Padua, Vicenza and Ancona. Giovanni Galimberti and Stefano Silvestri jointly head the department. Alberto Salvadè is active in corporate matters; Gaetano Salvioli is noted for tax-related work; Antonella Ceschi is a key name for real estate; and Federico Marini-Balestra handles antitrust-related matters in the space.
Bird & Bird‘s luxury goods team covers a range of practice areas but is particularly strong in IP thanks to both the firm’s global reputation and the presence in the team of Massimiliano Mostardini, who is ‘a true legend in the Italian and European landscape of IP professionals‘. Mostardini jointly heads the group with Giovanni Galimberti and Stefano Silvestri. Claudia Ricciardi and Rita Tardiolo were promoted to counsel in 2019; Ricciardi focuses on IP contracts, and Tardiolo, recognised as ‘one of the most capable and committed members of the focus team’, has expertise in IT, copyright and advertising.(Hall of Fame)
Bird & Bird is regarded as ‘a benchmark in Italy’ for patent litigation and more generally for the full range of IP matters. The team represents food, fashion, media and pharmaceutical companies in patent and trademark litigation, often of a cross-border nature, operating as an integrated part of the wider firm’s top-rated international practice. Italy managing partner Giovanni Galimberti and firmwide chair Massimiliano Mostardini co-head the practice in Milan, alongside the much-praised Arturo Leone – described as ‘an undisputed authority’ – in Rome. Antonella De Gregori made partner in May 2019, while Claudia Ricciardi and Rita Tardiolo were promoted to counsel. The team, which also includes senior counsel Fulvio Mellucci, was recently boosted by the arrival of Eleonora Rosati, who joined as of counsel in January 2019 and divides her time between Milan and London.
Bird & Bird‘s technology and communications team is jointly headed by chairman Massimiliano Mostardini, head of telecoms Arturo Leone, head of IT Roberto Camilli, and head of media Giovanni Galimberti. The firm has particular expertise in the IP areas of copyright, trade marks and patents. It has recently represented the main Italian telecom company Telecom Italia in a series of disputes involving antitrust and IP law (advertising and copyright violations). The team also advises a number of high-profile domestic and international clients in the technology and media sectors.
