Led by Olaf Trojan and Paul Waszink, the Bird & Bird LLP team offers a comprehensive service across the media sector ranging from freedom of speech to violations of the Media Act and issues surrounding loot boxes. Recent work includes representing Skyscanner in a high-profile case concerning accusations it presented misleading ticket offerings in its search results; following a District Court ruling, the team is representing the client on its appeal to the Supreme Court. Other clients include NPO, Discovery and Sony Pictures. Senior associate Berend van der Eijk has a strong focus on the tech side and there have been a number of recent new hires including Marianne Minnecré from the Dutch Media Authority.

As well as leading Bird & Bird LLP’s consulting and regulation practice, Marjolein Geus heads the Hague-based global tech and communications sector group. She led a team appointed by the European Commission in an extensive public tender procedure to perform the EU wide study on the implementation of the Net Neutrality provisions in the EU. Other key team members include Paul Waszink, who has a focus on regulatory regimes, and senior counsel Frank Simons. New hires include Marianne Minnecré from the Dutch Media Authority and Wilfred Steenbruggen previously with Leijnse Artz.

Dispute resolution: Commercial litigation Tier 2

Bird & Bird LLP’s ‘responsive’ team is ‘easy to work with’; it has a core focus on the technology, communication and media sectors, and maintains a strong reputation in the field of liability and insurance disputes. Olaf Trojan and practice head Evelyn Tjon-En-Fa, who is acting as Supreme Court counsel on the matter, are representing Skyscanner in appeal proceedings regarding allegations of misleading ticket offerings. The 'very dedicated' Tjon-En-Fa also successfully represented Allianz and Zurich in a €3.5m claim submitted by AtteroHolding N.V. Other clients include Crocs, Tele2, and Ablynx, a Belgian bio-pharmaceutical company.

Energy: transactional Tier 2

Bird & Bird LLP handles the structuring and development of national and international energy projects, especially in the wind and solar sectors. Sophie Dingenen, who is dual-qualified in the Netherlands and the UK, is advising Unisun Energy Group on the acquisition of a solar portfolio and on the development of future projects. She is also project counsel to URENCO ChemPlants and provides strategic advice to the URENCO board. Other clients include Suntech, Eurus Energy Europe, and Better Energy Group.

EU and competition Tier 2

Bird & Bird LLP’s competition and public procurement practice is a key name for clients in the information technology, communications, electronics, media, energy, banking and financial services sectors. Well-regarded practice head Pauline Kuipers provides ongoing advise to MasterCard on competition-related topics pertaining to its interchange fees. Janneke Kohlen and Hein Hobbelen are also noted.

Industry focus: healthcare and life sciences Tier 2

Head of the Bird & Bird LLP life sciences group, Marc van Wijngaarden 'is a joy to work with, has a great eye for detail and leaves no stone unturned to explore possible arguments'. His team, which 'has a unique spread across Europe', is also home to Armand Killan and Wouter Pors who together have an impressive roster of pharmaceutical, biotech, medical devices, and research clients. The Bird & Bird LLP team is considered to be 'one of the strongest patent litigator teams in the Netherlands and has great collaboration with patent attorneys'. Wouter Pors and Armand Killan, 'who does an outstanding job', are two of the senior and highly regarded practitioners; Killan continues to act for Nokia in patent infringement actions against Apple; the notable Marc van Wijngaarden counts Teva among his clients; associate Peter van Gemert is reported to 'have the skills to really become a great attorney'. Wouter Pors heads the practice and noted practitioners including Manon Rieger-Jansen, who leads the brand protection team. Corporate and projects partner Sophie Dingenen heads up the team at Bird & Bird LLP providing expertise especially in the renewables space; she is counsel to URENCO ChemPlants where she advises on all project-related matters. Dingenen is assisted by associate Tialda Beetstra who has a focus on regulatory matters. Insurance Tier 3

Bird & Bird LLP has 'a very proactive and collaborative way of working'. The team takes on policy coverage disputes in the infrastructure and construction arenas. It is acting for Allianz and Ducor, which have filed an appeal against Nalco in a long-running case concerned with a range of defects and other issues in connection with a cooling water conditioning system at the Ducor plant in Rotterdam. Evelyn Tjon-En-Fa and senior associate Laura Grijpma are two of the key advisors.

Commercial, corporate and M&a Tier 5
