Ameet B Naik, managing partner

Managing partner Ameet B. Naik discusses the growth trajectory for Naik Naik & Co.

What do you see as the main points that differentiate NAIK NAIK & CO from your competitors?

We are the pioneers in Industry focus, that’s why the business gravitates to us. We are a boutique firm. While have been known for our Media & Entertainment (M&E) practice, we have also emerged as leaders in Dispute Resolution across all sectors, particularly all litigation related to frauds, corporate, Private Equity. Even in the International Arbitration space, right from Shareholders’ disputes to Oil & Gas, we have catered to all varieties of clients. Basically, whatever Industry we foray into, what differentiates us from others is the merging the service line with the industry focus and ensure favorable results for our clients.

We have been way ahead of most of the firms, as far as Media & Entertainment practice is concerned. Within the M&E practice also, our convergence has been the highest because we understand all the realms of the sector – be it digital, technology or telecom. On the Dispute Resolution side, we have done the largest number of frauds and scams related matters. Our USP is the risk-mitigation prior to litigation. In the last three years, we have been a part of every important reported article. Our success rate has been almost hundred percent. In International Commercial Arbitration space, we do a minimum of 3 arbitrations out of Singapore. Not only have we gained volume in the recent times, there is a lot of gravitas and substance in our advice. As regards our Corporate Practice is concerned, many people would be pleasantly surprised to know that in the last two years, we have been at the forefront of at least five important deals in the M&E, Real Estate and Retail sectors. We are committed to hand-holding the promoters, virtually sitting down with them with a solution-oriented approach and nailing outcomes to their benefit.

Which practice do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?

Our Corporate Practice, with the team and the partners that we have, will be a force to reckon with. The cumulative years of experience of our Corporate Partner, Abhishek Kale, and Associate Partner, Radhika Iyer, who is in charge of the Corporate Practice, is an indicator of the expertise and intellect that we bring to the table.

The two Partners in the Media & Entertainment Team – Madhu Gadodia & Ravindra Surywanshi, form a team that is synonymous with quality legal advice, turnaround time and domain expertise. They are well-supported by Abha Shah, the Associate Partner who is known to handle volumes of non-litigation work in the M&E with ease and client-focus. Within M&E, we represent some of the biggest stalwarts on the broadcasting and digital platforms.

Almost all the Partners contribute to our Dispute Resolution practice. The wealth of experience and the number of Partners that we have for Dispute Resolution has made it emerge as our one of our strongest areas in the recent past. In particular, Anuja Jhunjhunwala, Partner, holds expertise in all litigation related to Bankruptcy, Insolvency, Frauds, White Collar Crime and Family disputes.
We are also actively involved in Private Client Practice (PCP), which gives us a 360 degree touch to all the all the legislations – right from personal law to wills, codices, family laws, etc.

What's the main change you've made in the firm that will benefit clients?

We have strengthened our Partnership by adding one more Equity Partner and two Associate Partners, and we are open to making the Partnership more robust by adding more Partners to the platform of Naik Naik & Co. The process has just begun.

We are a professionally managed firm, with emphasis on Knowledge Creation and Standardization, which has also helped us in enhancing our productivity. This has, in turn, benefitted the clients since we have become more cost-conscious towards billing and ensure that least billable hours are charged to them.

Another very important and deliberate change that we have introduced over the past few years is that the clients get most Partner-Time as compared to other Firms. All my partners give valuable Partner-Time to the clients. This ensures personal involvement and better understanding of clients’ issues, enabling us to provide crisp and to the point advice, at cost-effective rates.

Is technology changing the way you interact with your clients, and the services you can provide them?

Absolutely. The interface that we have with our clients in terms of newsletters, mailers. We are quite participative with our clients and technology has made the interaction with the clients more real-time and convenient. Being known for the TMT practice, we understand this far better than other firms. Our offices are well-equipped with state of art technology and interaction with clients located abroad is virtually at the click of a single button.

Can you give us a practical example of how you have helped a client to add value to their business?

We have assisted two of the top ten conglomerates of the country in acquiring top existing players in Digital Platform, Gaming Platform and Talent Acquisition Platform. All the deals that we have orchestrated have been successful in protecting the clients’ interests owing to our understanding of the demand, supply and other economic factors.

Because we understand the industry and factors that have a play in the industry, we are able to connect the dots better, evaluate the deal and create value-addition.

Are clients looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms - where do you see the firm in three year's time?

Our two-fold mantra is key and speed. We have already established ourselves as a brand that is very strategic in its solutions and hand-holding.

Naik Naik will be known, in three years from now, as a leader in the Corporate, Litigation and Technology space. We are strengthening our foothold in all the emerging businesses since we are not conventional in our practice and orthodox in our approach.

With a more robust partnership, we are anyway far ahead of others in terms of sheer talent.

Given our international affiliations and our international footprint in terms of cross-border work and international disputes, we are, perhaps the best-suited firm to grapple with the opening-up of the legal sector.
