Kannika Boontaim, Managing Partner

Managing Partner, Kannika Boontaim explains how KPMG Law is more than a traditional law firm

1) What do you see as the main points that differentiate KPMG Law from your competitors?

In Thailand, KPMG Law sets itself apart by operating within the robust framework of KPMG. We leverage our multidisciplinary model to offer a true one-stop-shop that traditional law firms often cannot provide. As part of the KPMG network, we seamlessly integrate legal services with other professional disciplines, offering clients a comprehensive solution. For instance, we excel in providing integrated due diligence services, a testament to the unique capabilities that our multidisciplinary approach brings to the table. This holistic approach distinguishes us in the market, providing clients with unparalleled depth and breadth in their legal and business needs.

2) Which practices do you see growing in the next 12 months? What are the drivers behind that?

We anticipate significant growth in our Market Entry, M&A, Employment Law, and Corporate Reorganization practices in Thailand over the next 12 months. The liberalization of the Thai economy, coupled with increased foreign investor interest in sectors such as manufacturing, retail, and renewable energy, are key drivers. Thailand’s participation in various free trade agreements further stimulates foreign investment, mirroring the dynamic economic landscape.

3) What’s the main change you’ve made in the firm that will benefit clients?

In Thailand, we’ve strategically reorganized our teams across deals, tax, and legal. This streamlined approach enhances efficiency and ensures our clients receive precise, responsive advice. Recognizing the value of this integrated model, our clients have experienced the benefits of our client-centric focus and seamless service delivery.

4) Is technology changing the way you interact with your clients, and the services you can provide them?

KPMG Law and Global Legal Services have announced a significant expansion of their work in the legal services space, building on the longstanding global alliance between KPMG and Microsoft and the joint commitment to AI innovation. KPMG is utilizing Azure OpenAI Service to help define how KPMG firms’ legal professionals will help to deliver next generation technology solutions for clients, while also enhancing the capabilities of their colleagues.

The collaboration combines KPMG firms’ market-leading, multi-disciplinary expertise and consulting offerings across legal operations, technology, data and cyber security with Microsoft Azure and AI technologies. KPMG Digital Gateway for Law is one example of a technology platform that runs on Microsoft Azure – a practical illustration of how KPMG professionals are using Microsoft’s transformational artificial intelligence (AI) technology to offer increased value to clients.

KPMG firms’ suite of services are designed to offer complete access to legal support framed in practicality – preparing clients to adopt and implement generative AI within their legal teams and helping those teams advise on how to navigate the shifting legal and regulatory landscape.

This transformative approach ensures that we not only keep pace with the rapidly evolving AI landscape but also position our clients and ourselves for success in the future world of work.

5) Can you give us a practical example of how you have helped a client to add value to their business?

Our global multidisciplinary approach proved invaluable for a client seeking to expand its business. Leveraging our extensive network, we identified suitable business partners, facilitated strategic alignment, and then executed the business plan. Our team provided comprehensive services, including business model development, market analysis, investment modeling, cross-border tax advice, and a range of legal services. This collaborative effort from professionals worldwide resulted in tangible, positive outcomes for the client.

6) Are clients looking for stability and strategic direction from their law firms – where do you see the firm in three years’ time?

Clients in Thailand, like anywhere else, value stability and strategic direction. At KPMG Law, we understand that our professionals play a crucial role in building trust and maintaining client relationships. Through ongoing learning and development initiatives, international opportunities, and a commitment to work-life balance, we aim to be the trusted advisors for our clients in Thailand. In three years, we envision KPMG Law as one of the leading law firms, continuing to provide exceptional services and being the employer of choice in the Thai legal market.
