Dato’ Azmi Mohd Ali is the Senior Partner of Azmi & Associates, a corporate and commercial-based law firm of more than 85 lawyers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He is an experienced corporate lawyer with extensive expertise in areas of mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, cross-border transactions, corporate restructuring, banking and finance, project finance, privatization, debt restructurings, energy, oil and gas.
Career
Dato’ Azmi started his legal career in 1984 in PETRONAS and had spent 4 1/2 years as a counsel in E&P Division where he was involved in numerous projects such as gas sales agreements, production sharing contracts, joint development authorities and procurement of goods and services. He left PETRONAS as the Head of Gas/ New Ventures, Upstream Legal Department in 1990 to work as a lawyer in a boutique law firm of T. Tharu & Associates from the year 1990 to 1995. From 1995-2000, he was the Partner and Head Department of Corporate, Commercial and Special Projects in Hisham, Sobri & Kadir. Dato’ Azmi is one of the founding partners of Azmi & Associates. The Firm was established on 1st September 2000 as a small legal firm that made its initial presence known to the market as a corporate-commercial law firm. He currently sits on the Board of three listed companies on the KLSE including one as chairman. He is also a director for PNS Berhad (a government-owned franchise financing company). He has been constantly regarded amongst the top corporate lawyers in Malaysia. He has served as visiting Professor at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and is currently serving as visiting Professor at University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Law School. Due to his achievements, he has consistently been nominated by AsiaLaw Leading Lawyers survey for 2006, 2007, 2010 to 2014 as one of the most highly-acclaimed legal experts in the Asia-Pacific region in the practice areas of Capital Markets and Corporate Finance. He has also been recognized by the Asia Pacific Legal 500 in the area of Corporate and Merger & Acquisition for the year 2008 and 2009 and Asia’s “Hottest Lawyers” in 2007, 2009 and 2010 by Asian Legal Business Magazine.
