Partner, National Head of Liability, Personal Injury, Property, Product, Subrogated Recoveries, Royal Commissions.
As a senior partner and market leading expert specialising in general commercial insurance, Gillian leads the firm’s national liability team of more than 50 partners and lawyers and in the last year has focussed on supporting her team and clients through the uncertainty of the pandemic, keeping them connected and cohesive, while championing inclusive new ways of working.
Gillian has particular experience in handling and providing strategic input into complex, large scale multi-party claims. She advises many of the largest Australian and international insurers, The London Market, underwriting agencies, brokers, claims managers, TPA’s and insureds. Gillian is particularly adept at handling matters which require an additional layer of sensitivity and innovative proactive responses. She has had significant involvement advising clients across a number of Royal Commissions and currently advises institutions and insurers in respect to abuse claims.
Disruption, innovation and transformation are at the forefront of the conversations Gillian has with her clients as she loves to bring mixed skill sets together to collaborate on solutions which respond to the rapidly evolving insurance environment.
Gillian serves as a board member of Global Insurance Law Connect (GILC), a global network of independent insurance law firms. She chairs the Asia Pacific regional group. She has been a member of the firm’s Board and she chairs Sparke Helmore’s Diversity Committee which is responsible for oversight of the firm’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategy. The firm’s recognition as Employer of Choice for Gender Equality by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency for two years running, in 2018/19 and 2019/20, and being named a Diversity Council Australia Inclusive Employer for 2019-20, are just some of the successes of this strategy. Gillian also founded the Six Degrees network, which supports Sparke Helmore’s community of women through networking, leadership, mentoring and collaboration.
Gillian is routinely recognised for her contribution to both Diversity and Inclusion initiatives as well as her contribution to the Insurance Industry. In 2021 Chambers Asia Pacific awarded her Highly Commended in the Diversity and Inclusion category and Insurance Business Australia named her as one of 42 Elite Women in Insurance in 2021. She was a finalist for Insurance Partner of the Year in 2017 and 2018, and is regularly rated among Australia’s leading insurance lawyers in Legal 500 Asia Pacific.
Gillian has sat on many charitable and NFP boards including schools and aged care. She is currently a Director of the Anzac Research Foundation which supports health and medical research conducted through Concord Hospital and Sydney University.
