Position

Rebecca’s practice is focused on the defence of catastrophic injury claims arising out of RTA, EL and PL accidents. Her caseload consists mainly of claims concerning severe brain injury, amputations and other multiple traumatic injuries. Historically most of her cases have damages valued in excess of £1m. She has dealt with a number of cases involving children who have sustained severe brain injuries and liability has been in dispute. She has dealt with claims involving periodical payments. She has handled a number of cases involving serious injuries arising from falls from heights where alcohol was an issue. She has investigated and defended numerous complex EL claims involving a number of parties such as employers, main contractors and occupiers.

It also has specialist teams dedicated to marine and abuse claims, and also catastrophic injury and local authority claims. The firm regularly acts in multimillion-pound cases and cases involving seriously injured children and babies. Joe Wakeford heads the team and acts for large insurers and in non-clinical claims for the NHS Litigation Authority, in addition to handling inquests. Andrew Lawson is adept at defending catastrophic injury claims particularly in relation to road traffic accidents, he is ‘professional’ and ‘achieves outstanding results’. Rebecca Shafto has ‘good judgement’ and defends catastrophic injury claims involving brain injuries, amputations and multiple traumatic injuries. Clients include Direct Line Group, QBE, Gallagher Bassett, North Somerset Council and FirstPort. Recent work includes acting for Liverpool Victoria in a road traffic accident case in which an individual became paraplegic, involving defending the garage which undertook an MOT of the vehicle shortly before the crash.
