Jonathan Clay is on BLM’s executive board and is the head of the general insurance sector. He is client relationship manager for BLM with Zurich Insurance pic, a top five UK insurer and BLM’s biggest client, and the Ecclesiastical Insurance Group. Jonathan is in the team handling group and individual claims where sexual and physical abuse is alleged against local authorities, educational establishments, religious organisations and charities and their past and present employees. Jonathan has advised and helped develop strategies to deal with the high level of media interest these cases attract. He advised an insurer on the future potential value of historic abuse cases that were still to come to light, to assist the insurer in negotiating the end to a reinsurance treaty. The team also handles claims relating to bullying, stress, and assaults relating to children, the disabled and the elderly alike. Jonathan was appointed as legal advisor to a working party in a metropolitan borough council undertaking a review of safeguarding of children. More recently Jonathan’s expertise in employers’ and public liability claims has become balanced across the public and private sectors advising larger corporate organisations on general management of their claims and developing policies including stress management in the workplace and data protection issues. Jonathan has addressed the annual conference of the Association of Directors of Social Services on the topic of historical sexual abuse claims.
