Position

Maryanna is a tax partner advising on corporation tax, international tax, VAT, stamp taxes and other levies, the Patent Box and R&D tax credits.

She advises on corporate tax, VAT and stamp taxes, especially reorganisations, debt restructuring, M&A partnerships, real estate, and Fine Art also shareholder-facing taxes on dividends and share disposals.

Maryanna also advises on international tax including planning and transactional advice where there is another jurisdiction involved, in particular USA. As well as cross-border withholding taxes on interest, dividends and royalties, VAT and inbound and outbound investment.

In addition, she has extensive experience of tax issues and disputes such as situations where tax has or could become a problem, imperfectly implemented transactions, situations where tax law has changed, problems arising from tax avoidance schemes, commercial disputes and disputes with HMRC and tax litigation.

Maryanna is a member of the Chartered Institute of Tax technical committees for corporate tax and for international tax.

Stephenson Harwood is most noted for its funds, asset and transport sector expertise, where the team stands out for having 'a deep knowledge of the subject matter'. It also has an active general corporate tax and real estate practice, alongside a growing offering of private equity tax services. Hugo Jenney heads the group and is currently advising Transport for London on tax aspects of the Crossrail development, and related structuring issues. John Meehan advised HC-One on a major acquisition of care homes from Bupa; and on Schroder UK Real Estate Fund's £44m investment in five self-storage facilities and related businesses. In another highlight, Maryanna Sharrock assisted Hong Kong-based SEA Holdings with its £258m acquisition of a corporate structure that owns 33 Old Broad Street, which included advise on tax provisions in the share sale documentation. Senior associate Kate Worthington is also recommended for her vast expertise in the real estate sector.

Stephenson Harwood's indirect tax team is integral to the firm's wider transactional practice, and predominantly handles VAT, SDLT and stamp duty matters that arise out of real estate, leasing, asset finance and transportation. The firm has also developed a niche in bespoke VAT and customs duty advice concerning shipping, aviation and fine art. Hugo Jenney leads the team and has expertise in tonnage tax and air passenger duty. In addition to transactional and advisory work, 'very good' Maryanna Sharrock is also experienced in VAT disputes. John Meehan and senior associate Kate Worthington provided sector-specific VAT advice to HC-One in relation to its £300m acquisition of care homes from Bupa.

  • Companies should plan now to minimise their pension protection levy

    The amount that pension schemes have to pay to the Pension Protection Fund (PPF) for the year 2006/07 may have increased by as much as five times the previous year's levy. Employers who ultimately bear the cost of many pension schemes will need to make plans now to ensure the levy payable for the year 2008/09 is kept to a minimum.
