Joshua has appeared as lead counsel in over 140 criminal trials with particular expertise in cases involving serious sexual offending, child abuse, homicide and serious fraud. He has extensive experience in regulatory and disciplinary prosecutions, both as a prosecutor and as defence counsel.
Joshua undertakes prosecutions under the Resource Management Act 1991 on behalf of the Canterbury Regional Council and Southland Regional Council. He provides strategic advice to both Councils on their compliance, monitoring and enforcement responsibilities, working closely with both investigators and upper management.
Joshua represents the New Zealand Law Society in disciplinary proceedings brought against lawyers. He has previously been appointed by the Law Society as an investigator pursuant to a statutory power. Joshua acts for other professionals (e.g. chartered accountants, licensed building practitioners) in the defence of disciplinary proceedings.
Joshua was the liaison partner for the Auckland High Court when he was a partner at another national firm. He administered and had oversight over all matters prosecuted in the High Court. He has prosecuted on behalf of many government departments, including leading a series of high profile prosecutions involving 20+ defendants arising from a joint Police, DIA and Customs investigation.
In addition to his regulatory, disciplinary and criminal practice, Joshua also acts for clients involved in relationship property disputes and Family Court proceedings relating to the care of children. He routinely deals with complex and high value relationship property disputes with an overlay of related trust and company issues. Joshua is adept at negotiating and resolving such disputes out of Court, whilst also being primed and ready to initiate or defend Court proceedings when that step proves necessary.
