Matt is a highly regarded insolvency and restructuring specialist. He is a general commercial litigator with a depth of experience and reputation in the field. Matt navigates complex matters for his clients, advising creditors, investors and other stakeholders in relation to enforcement of security, restructuring, recovery and insolvency strategies.

Matt’s varied practice extends to acting for insolvency practitioners in all aspects of corporate insolvency appointments such as voluntary administration, receiverships and liquidation; many matters have a cross border element.

Matt returned to Russell McVeagh in 2009 from Henry Davis York in Sydney, where he was a partner from 2002. He spent a number of years at Herbert Smith in London. Matt was admitted to practise in New Zealand in 1993, England and Wales in 1997, and New South Wales (Australia) in 2000.


Matt is a Russell McVeagh Board member, and a member of Insol: the International Association of Insolvency professionals. He recently stepped down as Board and Vice Chair of the Restructuring, Insolvency & Turnaround Association New Zealand after 6 years.

Russell McVeagh has demonstrable experience in high-profile insolvencies, often involving a cross-border element, in addition to domestic insolvency processes and corporate distress matters arising out of the property development and construction, hospitality and retail sectors. Praised for his ‘depth of experience in this space’, Matthew Kersey leads the practice and regularly acts for secured creditors and insolvency practitioners in relation to security enforcement issues, restructuring, recovery and insolvency strategies. Polly Pope advises receivers, liquidators, voluntary administrators and creditors in solvent corporate reorganisations and takeovers, while banking and finance partner John Powell assists domestic banks and corporate clients on restructuring matters. Other key contacts in the team include Nathaniel Walker and senior associate Jeremy Upson, and senior associate Alex MacDuff rejoined the firm in November 2021 from Allen & Overy LLP’s London office.
