Alongside mainstream corporate tax work and tax litigation, William has a special interest in the taxation of real estate and of the oil and gas sector; he acts for several UK REITs amongst other property clients, and advised HM Treasury on the introduction of the ‘decommissioning relief deeds’ for operators in the North sea.

The tax department at Slaughter and May is jointly led by M&A and private equity tax expert Gareth Miles and Mike Lane, whose practice covers international taxation and transactional issues. The group continues to advise multinational corporations and financial institutions on corporate, commercial and finance transactions, as well as providing tax consultancy and contentious tax advice. Another well-known name in the team is Steve Edge, who is regularly called upon to assist with tax issues arising from day-to-day business affairs and restructurings. William Watson is noted for his expertise in real estate and oil and gas tax matters. Dominic Robertson is also recommended. Former practice head Sara Luder retired in 2020.
