Position

Alexander is a partner in the information, communications and technology group who advises on outsourcing and commercial ICT contracts for users and suppliers of ICT products and services. He also has a particular specialism in data protection and privacy. His experience includes handling large-scale, complex outsourcings (both IT and business process), software development, licensing and maintenance, telecoms supply and procurement contracts, major commercial contracts for the supply of goods and services and assisting clients in a variety of industries on all aspects of privacy compliance.

Simmons & Simmons data protection and privacy group is headed up by the 'intuitive and astute' Alexander Brown. The department is noted for its expertise in the financial sector and is instructed by HSBC on data protection and digital matters. It is also acting for Telefónica UK on all data protection compliance matters and advised on its project preparing for the GDPR. Beyond advising financial institutions and telecoms clients, the team has particular expertise acting for investment funds, technology and life sciences companies. Recently promoted partner Lawrence Brown is highlighted for his 'methodical approach'.

The information and communications technology team at Simmons & Simmons provides 'speedy, relevant and timely advice that is always succinct and commercially focused' to clients such as Samsung, Telefónica UK, Virgin Media and BT plc. The team is also instructed by OneWeb on complex TMT regulatory issues concerning satellite broadband, in numerous jurisdictions across Europe, Africa and the Middle East. In another work highlight James Cotter led a team acting for VEON on a project for the transformation of the clients supply chain, including drafting and renegotiating terms of procurement as well as automating certain contract templates. Tom Wheadon attracts praise for 'his tireless and selfless ability to be there whenever needed to provide  measured legal advice'. He heads the practice, which includes head of TMT Alexander Brown, and Hinal Patel, who advises  buyers and suppliers in the technology and telecoms sectors. Changes to the team includes Lawrence Brown's promotion to the partnership and Tony Woodgate's retirement.

  • Failure to counter financial crime: Norwich Union Life

    In December 2007, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) imposed a fine of £1.26m on Norwich Union Life (part of the Aviva Group), one of the largest life insurance businesses in the UK with around seven million customers. The fine related to failures to take reasonable care to establish and maintain effective systems and controls for countering the risks of financial crime. The fine is the latest confirmation of the emphasis being placed on protecting clients and customers from the threat of financial crime.
