Mahrie specialises in investment funds and financial services regulatory work with an emphasis on regulated funds such as UCITS. She acts for fund and wealth managers, administrators, platforms and distributors as well as financial advisers and other intermediaries.

Simmons & Simmons' team has vast expertise in regulatory and commercial issues impacting the retail funds sphere. It generates work from a broad client base, including investment banks, funds and fund managers, brokers and insurance companies. Neil Simmonds leads the group, which has been advising clients on matters such as the implementation of the Senior Managers and Certification  Regime and Brexit planning. In addition to assisting with the establishment of funds, the team also advises on regulatory requirements across multiple jurisdictions, licensing, registration and setting up commercial arrangements with distributors. Simmonds works closely with Mahrie Webb and Catherine Weeks. Associate John Dooley, managing associate Tristram Lawton and Ursula Goniszewska are other key practitioners in the team, as is supervising associate Andrew Desmond.

  • Failure to counter financial crime: Norwich Union Life

    In December 2007, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) imposed a fine of £1.26m on Norwich Union Life (part of the Aviva Group), one of the largest life insurance businesses in the UK with around seven million customers. The fine related to failures to take reasonable care to establish and maintain effective systems and controls for countering the risks of financial crime. The fine is the latest confirmation of the emphasis being placed on protecting clients and customers from the threat of financial crime.
