Chapman Tripp has a multi-disciplinary practice with a strong track record in some of New Zealand’s largest and most significant ICT projects. It provides strategic and commercial advice, handles acquisitions and disposals for TMT clients, and also acts in contentious matters. Among its key clients are Microsoft, which it advises on major projects and ongoing operations in New Zealand and Australia, Mercury Energy and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. It also acts for many of the leading media and telecoms companies in New Zealand. Corporate partner Tim Sherman in Wellington and Kelly McFadzien in Auckland, who advises on on data protection, privacy and consumer law,  lead the practice. Auckland-based Bruce McClintock, who is CEO of the firm’s technology and innovation business, Zeren, is a leading light in the market.

It represents some of the country’s largest businesses including Fisher & Paykel Healthcare and Fonterra on business-critical IP matters, as well as acting for leading global technology and entertainment companies. The firm’s active corporate practice is backed up with extensive IP commercialisation expertise and a strong contentious IP practice. IP, competition law and civil litigation specialist Matt Sumpter leads the practice from Auckland, where Kelly McFadzien handles corporate matters with an emphasis on IP, notably in the TMT sector.
