Career

Jeong-il (J.I.) Park is a tax attorney/CPA at Kim & Chang. He practices primarily in the areas of finance tax and insurance tax.

Mr. Park has over 27 years of experience in advising many foreign and domestic clients on a wide range of finance and corporate tax issues. A key focus of his practice has been advising clients in the financial and insurance industries on tax matters including but not limited to business restructuring, merger and acquisition, securities issuance and finance, insurance product development, and a wide range of complex tax issues, including the issuance and trading of virtual assets.

Mr. Park’s representative work in recent years includes providing tax advice to clients on infrastructure funds and their project companies, cross-border structured financing, subsidiarization of foreign financial institution’s branch and outbound investment using domestic and offshore investment vehicles, tax audit defense on virtual asset exchanges, tax appeals, advice on the structure of issuance of overseas virtual assets and tax advice on NFT transactions. In addition, he has provided comprehensive tax advice in connection with tax audits, tax appeals & litigations, tax law changes, and represents taxpayers in tax disputes.

Prior to Kim & Chang, Mr. Park worked at Samil PwC in external audits and consulting for domestic and foreign clients.

Mr. Park has lectured on the tax aspects of cross-border structured financing, including Asset Backed Securities, at Hankyung Academy, and worked as a professional advisor to the Korea Ocean Business Corporation. He is also actively engaged in external activities, as seen by his involvements as the Outside Director and Audit Committee Member of Kakaopay Securities Corp. and auditor of Akros Investments Inc.

Mr. Park received his B.S. from the College of Business Administration at Seoul National University in 1991 and his M.B.A. from the Graduate School of Business Administration at Seoul National University in 1994. He also completed the International Tax Program at Harvard Law School in 2003 and a Ph.D. course in tax law at Sungkyunkwan University. He is a certified public accountant in Korea.
