Career

Lam was a former legal policy researcher in a ministerial agency of the Government of Vietnam. Lam joined VILAF Hanoi in 2008 and has been promoted to VILAF Partner in 2022. Lam specializes in Energy & Infrastructure, Corporate and M&A, and Capital Market. Lam’s work ethic and preciseness are vastly appreciated by clients in the Energy & Infrastructure practice as well as in other fields of his practice.

Lam has been regarded as a Rising Star in Corporate/M&A and Project Development by IFLR 1000 and a Rising Star in Corporate/M&A by AsiaLaw since 2019. In two successive years 2021 and 2022, Chambers and Partners highly ranked him in the Projects, Infrastructure & Energy sector.

In Projects, Infrastructure & Energy practice, Lam has advised BOT projects and other high profile infrastructure projects in all phases, including development, negotiation, documentation, licensing, project financing, construction, refinancing, divestment and operation. Lam’s high profile infrastructure projects include Son My LNG terminal, Son My 2 power, Quang Ninh power, O Mon II power, Vung Ang 2 power, Nghi Son 2 power, Van Phong 1 power, Vinh Tan 1 power, Vinh Tan 3 power, Mong Duong 2 power, Nam Dinh 1 power and Duyen Hai 2 power projects, and recent railway projects. In renewable energy sectors, Lam has been assisting reputable international investors in their investment in Vietnam, including both greenfield and M&A, and in different areas of onshore wind power, offshore wind power, grid-connected solar power, rooftop solar power and waste-to-power.

In M&A practice, Lam has been assisting foreign investors in a number of M&A transactions in power projects, real estate projects, manufacturing and mining projects.

In capital market practice, Lam has assisted in equity and bond deals for  Vincom Retail in 2017, Vinhomes in 2018 and recently Vingroup in 2021, among others.

Frequently sought out by foreign investors due to its reputation as a leading player in the LNG and gas sectors, VILAF act on an impressive display of joint ventures, acquisitions, divestments and financing mandates, both domestic and international, showing further expertise regarding regulatory, environmental, contractual and due diligence work. The practice is regularly engaged in high-value transactions pertaining to a wide range of traditional and renewable energy sources, with an increased flow of mandates regarding wind, solar and hydropower. The group is led by three individuals, the first being Phong Tran who also sits in the banking and finance and capital markets practice, leveraging this financing proficiency to advise international lenders on first-of-its-kind funding structures for gas and LNG projects.
